It would be helpful if you could tell us where and when you came
across this quotation. Sometimes even a tiny clue can lead to an
answer, so any details that you recall would be welcome.

I was asked by an acquaintance if I could identify this quotation. It continues:
"So that problems now with which we wrestle
 Seem simply of the mind"

If this still proves impenetrable (or even if it doesn't)you might like to try:
"Let pride grow big, my rose, and let the clear
And damask colour of thy leaves appear;"

This,of course, provided our masters (Google Answers) approve!

Hi !

Until I started looking for your quotation, I had no idea there were
so many chess poems. I haven't found yours, but here are two you might
like, both posted at Chessville. Nichlas Breton's dates from the late
sixteenth or early seventeenth century - he lived from 1542 - 1626:

C. A. Escoffery has a similarly structured poem quoted at:

http://www.chessville.com/misc/misc_stuff_poem.htm

There's even a Web site which claims to be dedicated to chess poems:

http://www.totalsurf.com/pages/Chess/poems.shtml

So far there only seems to be one, and I can't say it's my style of
poem.

There's apparently also a famous poem by Borges, but I have not found
it quoted in full, and the section I did see appeared to be in a
different metre.

Good luck - it's a fascinating hunt.
