What are some good ideas to look for an IT job in Montreal (from
outside of Montreal, for the time being)? It should be something else
than online job listings, posting the resume online, writing to emails
from company websites, or emailing people that also work there/ look
for a job there. In other words, I'm looking for some inspiration for
more unusual ways, if possible.

Thanks!

Thanks for this question! I believe I can help you with your question
about finding employment in Montreal.

If you don't want to search for a job online, you might consider
registering with temporary help agencies in the Montreal area, who
specialize in IT and Technology jobs. Then, you can get an idea of
what types of jobs are available, and when. Temporary help agencies
place employees in jobs on a contract basis, and often they end up
becoming permanent positions. You can work for who you choose, when
you choose. Many people work for temporary employment agencies
exclusively, especially when they have just relocated to a new area.

Looking for a job online can also be helpful, simply to show what
types of jobs are available in an area, and what they are paying. It's
a good idea to make sure your resume is ready and polished. Have
someone else read it to make sure there are no mistakes or grammar
problems before you send it to prospective employers. It's also a good
idea to follow up with an email or letter, after a week or so. Most
employers are deluged with applications and resumes, so you need to
remind them how interested you are in working with them.

Here are some listing for temporary help agencies.

You might also consider an executive search company. They will take
your resume, and contact employers on your behalf. They tend to be
somewhat expensive, but often have leads to jobs that are not
advertised in traditional methods, like newspapers and Internet job
boards. Here are some lists of Executive Search Companies in Montreal.

Hello Nvwriter,

thank you for all that information.
You mention I might "consider an executive search company". Do you
know what price range we're talking about (a rough estimate is
enough)? If you cannot provide this information easily, drop it and I
will just find out via email.

Thanks especially for the tip of resending the application. But, what
do you say when you do that? "May I remind you"... or "In case the
last email got lost" or ...?

Hi j_philipp! The costs really vary. Some charge a flat fee, some
charge a percentage of your hiring salary, and some charge the
employer. It really depends on the agency. When I send a resume again,
or follow up, I just say something like, "I'm following up with you to
let you know I'm very interested in your position," or something like
that. It's just to keep your name in front of the hiring people, so
they remember you, and realize you are serious about the job. Hope
this helps!

To be honest, I can't think of anything other than online job
listings, posting the resume online, writing to emails from company
websites, or emailing people that also work there/ look for a job
there.

Maybe you can get in touch with the Canadian Embassy. Even the idea of
bodyshoppers isn't too bad.

Aditya2k,

thanks... what are bodyshoppers?

Bodyshoppers is a term used where I stay at the moment, for
people/companies who are tied up with some companies abroad. They
guarantee people jobs on the condition that they receive a commission
(say 10% of their salary). On a short-term basis, its 'OK', but in the
long run, the bodyshopper option is not the best
