When I was just a little kid, about 30 years ago, I saw a black &
white movie which I would like to identify. The only thing I can
remember is that it was taking place in rural America, involved a
black family and it had a song with the words "sweet, sweet potato
pie".

All I have found is a reference to a song about "sweet potato pie"
being in a 1960 film called "A Crowning Experience." But the movie
was in Technicolor.

Here's a link to the online reference:

Here's a link to a description of the movie:

Could this be it?

You're an ace markj. That's the one.
I guess my tv was black and white, not the movie :-)
Thanks

Thanks for your clarification, and I'm glad I was able to help.

As I suggested, the movie you are looking for is "The Crowning
Experience." It starred Muriel Smith and is "loosely based on the
life of Afro-American educator Mary McLeod." Here again is the link
to the All Movie Guide listing of the film:
All Movie Guide: The Crowning Experience

Additional information:

Here is a link to some biographical information about Muriel Smith,
the star of the film:

Business

What little online information there is about this film can be
accessed by using the following Google search terms:
"the crowning experience" film OR movie muriel
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22the+crowning+experience%22+film+OR+movie+muriel

Search strategy:

I tried various Google searches before finding one that led me to the
movie you were looking for. The successful one used the following
search terms:
"sweet potato pie" movie OR film song
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=%22sweet+potato+pie%22+movie+OR+film+song&spell=1

I am happy to hear that this is the information you are seeking and to
have been able to provide it to you promptly. If any of the
information is unclear, please ask for clarification before rating the
answer.
