I have just acquired a piccy and a 'Spy' cartoon of Field Marshal Sir John Arabin Lintorn Simmons GCB GCMG (1821 - 1903) and both show him sporting the silliest moustache that I have ever seen. (At first, I thought that Pinky had been up to her usual tricks again.) Can anybody turn up any sillier ones that were worn for real (as opposed as for a joke) in that same era? | |

Dear Bryan, I am glad I found what you had in mind! I can assure you: No Pinky and no Photoshop are involved here. And as you requested, I hereby post my suggestions as an answer: Ambrose Burnside, Union General in the American Civil War http://cascolytravel.com/images/burnside.jpg (Source: Cascoly Travel Pages) His bold sideburns - moustache combination makes the general look like a pregnant sea cow. By the way, sideburns were named after Burnside by twisting his name. Unknown American Gentleman from the 1880s http://lonestar.texas.net/~csmart/images/art_samples/moustache.jpg (Source: Cable Smart) This poor person looks very much like the funny characters in 1920's silent movie comedies. Search strategy: As a histoy fan, I already knew General Burnside's extraordinary likeness. So I only had to search for his name: http://images.google.de/images?hl=de&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&newwindow=1&q=Burnside&sa=N&tab=wi&meta= The other gentleman I found by looking for ... "moustache" (he's hidden somewhere in the middle of the results): http://images.google.de/images?hl=de&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&newwindow=1&q=moustache Very best regards, Scriptor |

How 'bout Rollie Fingers? I think he wins late 20th century honors: "Rollie Fingers" National Baseball Hall of Fame http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/hofers_and_honorees/wallpaper/fingers_rollie.jpg |
