I have just acquired a piccy and a 'Spy' cartoon of Field Marshal Sir
John Arabin Lintorn Simmons GCB GCMG (1821 - 1903) and both show him
sporting the silliest moustache that I have ever seen.

(At first, I thought that Pinky had been up to her usual tricks
again.)

Can anybody turn up any sillier ones that were worn for real (as
opposed as for a joke) in that same era?

Hello and welcome back!

"Silly" is, of course, highly subjective. But I find these gentlemen's
moustaches absolutely ridiculous:

Ambrose Burnside, Union General in the American Civil War

His bold sideburns - moustache combination makes the general look like
a pregnant sea cow. By the way, sideburns were named after Burnside by
twisting his name.

This poor person looks very much like the funny characters in 1920's
silent movie comedies.

Scriptor

Brilliant!

If anybody could have done it, it had to be you.

But are you absolutely sure that Pinky has not been tweaking things?

No ... I just checked the time, she's still in La La Land.

Please post an answer!

Regards

Bryan

Dear Bryan,

I am glad I found what you had in mind! I can assure you: No Pinky and
no Photoshop are involved here. And as you requested, I hereby post my
suggestions as an answer:

Search strategy:

As a histoy fan, I already knew General Burnside's extraordinary
likeness. So I only had to search for his name:

The other gentleman I found by looking for ... "moustache" (he's
hidden somewhere in the middle of the results):

How 'bout Rollie Fingers? I think he wins late 20th century honors:
