In a Comment posted 10 July 2003, Digsalot advised: [QUOTE] The fact that all ships are ladies is one of the reasons fire trucks are red. Actually the main reason fire trucks are red is Queen Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth is also a ship. - Ships sail the seven seas. - Seas have fish. - Fish have fins. - The Russians once fought the Fins. - The Russians were Red. - Fire trucks are always rushin. - Therefor, fire trucks are red. I'm glad I could clear that up for you. digs [END QUOTE] Is there a name that describes this type of illogical logic? |

It's deductive reasoning with the fallacy of equivocation (ambiguity) -- occurs when a word is used in a different sense in the minor premise than in the major premise. eg -- The college has a special scholarship designed for poor students. My biology teacher told me that I was one of the poorest students he had ever known. I should receive a special scholarship from the college. http://webpages.shepherd.edu/maustin/rhetoric/deductiv.htm knowledge_seeker gave me this answer. But I told her I wasn't going to credit her for it. So I didn't As for the red firetruck thing, I read it someplace years ago. I need chocolate raspberry cheesecake. digsalot | |

It's an example of incorrect deductive logic. It could also be termed a fallacy. |

Woody Allen, in Love and Death: "All men are mortal. Socrates was mortal. Therefore, all men are Socrates. Which means that all men are homosexuals." "Love and Death" Woody Allen Site http://torp.priv.no/woody/films/lad.html Though it isn't true, it makes sense to me! ;-) |

I'm afraid Digsie suffers from a chocolate raspberry cheesecake deficiency. He gets a little loopy if he doesn't have any for a while. --Missy |
