I found the birthplace of the grandfather I am searching for in the
1851 British Census for Herefordshire. However, when counting the
census, they placed X's on the first few letters of the town name. I
have searched the list of parish names and have been unable to match
it. I believe it must be the name of a town or hamlet in Hereford.
The first 2 or 3 letters have been written over, the remaining letters
are "...apston, Hereford".

Hi sandy,

I have contacted the Herefordshire Council with your inquiry. Below is
the response I received:

"Thank you for your enquiry regarding name of town/hamlet.
I have forwarded your query to Isobel Gibson, Principal Research
Officer and
Elizabeth Semper, Archivist, who should respond to you direct.
I have recorded your details and your Customer Number is 155710.
If you have no response, please do not hesitate to contact us again to
enable us to complete your enquiry.

Kind Regards,
Jane Collins,
Area Information Officer,
Info in Herefordshire"

I was then contacted by the Archivist with the following message:

"Thank you for your email enquiry received 12 August 2003, forwarded
from
Info in Herefordshire.
If you could provide the details of the page of the census to which
you refer, we could check it here to see if we can work out what it
says.
We'd need the details of the parish and the person's name. A folio and
page
number if possible would be great too.

Yours sincerely
Elizabeth Semper O'Keefe
Senior Archivist"

I think if you contact her with the details she is asking for she will
be able to assist you.
I hope this helps you and if there is anything else I can do, please
don't hesitate to ask.

Regards,

I suppose you are referring ("have searched the list of parish names
") to the following:

Perhaps http://www.abcounties.co.uk/newgaz/index.htm might be helpful.
Or http://www.census-online.com/links/England/Herefordshire/

If you would mention the family name of your grandfather there might
be other ways of finding this place.

The nearest match I can find is Bishopstone, a village 7 miles from Hereford

Perhaps

Pipe Aston

could be another possibilty?

I'm going off very little information, and obviously the name of the
ancestor would probably provide more beneficial information, but it
seems that your town might also be Stapleton, which is located in
Herefordshire.
