Question ID: 242599
I have setup a server on my computer which is connected to the
internet via the campus network. (It dosent matter which server
really, say tomcat and jdk to run jsp)
Here is the problem:
The firewell on the campus network is setup in such a way that no one
can access ip address from outside the campus network. SO NO one can
see my webpage hosted on my own server from outside the campus
network. I am looking for a work around.
This is what I have figured (but I dont know if it feaseble)
Since I get public webspace on my college network (available to
anybody on the internet, hosted on college's server)
...if I would link (pull up or whatever the jargon) to the or run
scripts (jsp in this case) by having the webspace act (some how) as a
proxy(middle man, whatever the jargon ;-)

I have a feeling that I will get 'NO' as an answer, but I think it
never hurts to ask.

p.s please disregard any spelling mistakes

Hello:
  Please, answer a few questions:

-Are you able to execute scripts on the public webspace?
-Does the campus firewall filter all ports or just 80?
-Are you able to access directly from the server hosting the public
webspace to your computer?

Regards.

main server = server where you have webspace
your server = server wheren you have ur stuff

can you run tomcat or any other server on the main server ?

if you have shell access to the main server then you can start apache
or whatever you like. If the other ports, say port 2500 is not blocked
by firewall, you are good to go. YOu can configure apache as a proxy i
believe and go to "your server" to get the content. Now the request
will be made by apache and I am assuming you can access "your server"
fine from the main server.

Now, you need to be good at apache conf and all to get this working.
Another way is to develop something where you connect to people,
rather than you. If you connect to people, then you can send whatever
data you want to send.

You can pay some company 5.99 a month that lets you do server side
programming , and make a hub there. You will connect to that hub, and
that hub will tell your pc what other computers to connect to, to give
them data. Ofcourse other computers will need to know what your pc is
doing. Well, your pc can be doing simple ftp upload, and they could
have a ftp server running.

sounds good? hey, it was fun answering this question ;)

I don have any access to the main server :(

I can map to a network drive, which is actually my public webspace.
I get the ip address via DCHP.
I dont have a sell access. that is the sad part.

What i have is a computer that is on a campus network. The IP address
that appers to people outside the network is different from the one
inside the network (say when i run ipconfig on the command prompt)

I hope my clarification helped
