Question ID: 242866
I am doing a study on sun spots and I need to see daily
(if at all possible) photos of the sun since 1900.
I have a NASA site where I see daily sun photos (and almost
always there are sun spots), but only for 2003.
http://science.nasa.gov/spaceweather/images2003/04aug03/midi512_blank.gif

The above is what I need BUT for every day since 1900. The above does not
appear have even have daily views. They do not seem to post on weekends or
holidays. Oh well!!!!

I need 100 years of sun views to collect enough data and info.
50 years would be a second choice, but no less.

Hi John,

Nice to see you again, with another very interesting question. I've
made contact with someone who might be able to help you out with some
historical images. He's not sure about 100 years, says that
availability gets very spotty the further back you go in time, as I'm
sure you can imagine.

He does say, though, that there are daily images going back 50 years.
However, many of these are on 35mm or 70mm film and have not been
scanned. He wants to know your preference as to image size.

Again, I'm not sure if he'll be able to help you, but let me know your
preference as to image size and we'll take it from there.

Cheers,
Byrd

Hello Byrd.

Well this seems hopeful and helpful. Yes, I understand that going back
100 years, dialy sun photos could get scarce and be missing or faded,
useless.

I will take all I can get. The must have the correct orientation, i.e.
for the sun to be viewed as the top, center being north, or north as of
that date.

As for size, I can only say that the image that I see at this NASA
site is
adequate for my study.

I have downloading (saving) all the ones that I can get from this
year. Once saved, I can click on them and they get bigger.

Does that help, make sense?

Here are a few recent archives.

The images from spaceweather are from the SOHO satellite.
They are listed as "MDI Continuum" (Michelson Doppler Imager)
You can retrieve gif images from 256x256 to 1024x1024.
http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/realtime-mdi_igr.html

http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/summary_query_form
You can search for GIF images from MDI to find additional data.
Look for "SOHO MDI Intensitygram, full disk"
The first date for that image is 26 Jun 97.

Dear ulu-ga

I have been on the road and also with computers down,
I have not been able to check all of the excellent
sites you have located for me.

For these reasons I have not rated your answer.
Do bear with me and I shall rate you well, I do believe.
Thanks.

God bless you to know and do His will!

John P.
