Dear Curious-About-Stuff,
According to the US Census Bureau, in the twelve months proceeding
fall 2001, 9.3 American households (4.6% of them) remodelled their
kitchens. In most (5.5 Million households), the work was done by a
member of the household. In 2.4 Million houses, the work was conducted
by an outside contractor. Most (just over 3 Million) spent $1,000 and
under to remodel or renovate their kitchens, while 1.023 Million spent
between $1,000 and $2,999, and 2.136 Million households spent more
than that (Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Statistical Abstract of the
United States, 2002, Section 20, Table 606/950, <
http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/02statab/construct.pdf> also
available 2002 version <
http://www.census.gov/statab/www/saorder.html>, to which there are,
naturally, only partial statistics).
The past several years saw an increase in spending on kitchen
renovation and remodelling. On a comparative basis, these are previous
years data:
1998 4.6 Million <

1999 4.7 Million <

In addition, further information reveals that In the U.S. alone, The
Kitchen & Bath Business Magazine annually surveys 20,000 consumers and
reports that approximately 6.09 million kitchens were built or
remodeled in 1999. According to their forecasts for 2000, that number
is expected to rise to a total of 6.45 million units. Remodeling is
estimated to account for just over 75% of that market. It was also
noted that 60% of all remodels are initiated in households headed by
consumers 40 and older. (Google Cached version of

Regarding 2003, The 2003 Kitchen & Bath Business (KBB) Market
Forecaster predicts that:
The year 2003 will see 4.41 million kitchen remodels and kitchen
remodeling spending will jump 2.5% to a record $43.23 billion.
There will be another 1.63 million kitchens done in new
construction, bringing the total kitchen market in 2003 to 6.04
million, up 49% for the past five years. (Source: ICEBOX press
release, http://www.iceboxllc.com/press/icebox_0403d.html)
As for future projections [
] The U.S. Census Bureau, C-50 Series and
American Housing Survey, and National Association of Home Builders
(NAHB), noted that the residential remodeling market is expected to
increase at a steady rate of 3-5% per year through 2005. (ibid).
