Where do I get help with my dissertation? I live in central London and
I'm writing a dissertation of 20.000 about music softwares: Notation
Softwares, Ear Training Softwares, Improvisation Softwares and
Sequencing Softwares(Advantages-Dissadvantages etc). My deadline is in
August 2002. Do you know where can I find someone to help me for a
small fee?

Hi Vicky,

The best people to contact for dissertations are people who are
involved with educational institutions. A list of Music Departments in
UK can be found at this link
[http://www2.rhbnc.ac.uk/Music/Links/Musdepts/full.html#UnitedKingdom]

For content and other stuff about music, you can visit
[http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/mus/RBlinks.html], which is a comprehensive
directory of links to various music sites. Some of the links may not
work, but there are some good sites listed there.

If you have any clarifications, feel free to ask me. Or else, feel
free to rate this answer. I'm not satisfied until you're satisfied

Have a good day and all the best for your dissertation

Cheers,
aditya2k

Hallo, and thank you for your answer.

I am already in one of these Universities,(you sent me) and I don't
think it's wise to ask for help in another University.
A friend of mine told me that there are people who help students with
dissertations for a fee. What I'm asking is if you know a
person/organisation (in London, UK) to contact directly for help.

Thank you
Vicky

Hi Vicky,

Sorry for the delay in responding. My ISP has been having
intermittent problems in the last 3-4 days. I'm responding from a
cyber cafe.

If you're looking for an individual, you're asking for trouble.
Personal experience tells me that these guys are the worst, and they
rip you off. I've not been able to come across any organizations in
London specific to music.

However, I did come across some online sites which may be useful.

Dissertations are an important, but often overlooked, source of
information for researchers. They represent some of the most current
theories and ideas in scholarship and often have comprehensive
bibliographies. Copies of dissertations can be difficult to find
because they are not widely advertised and are often only held by the
library at the originating institution. However, there are many
sources for locating titles and often abstracts of dissertations from
many countries.

Hello Vicky,

It might be useful to put your query out on some relevant mailing
lists. These two sites might be of some help in this respect:
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/wwwboard/ (Music Software Discussion and
Help)

http://www.strath.ac.uk/Departments/JHLibrary/musele.html#software
(Jordanhill Library - Electronic resources on music)

best of luck

Vicky,

You didn't specify what type of help you needed in your question.
Their are three broad categories of dissertation help: coaching help,
statistics and data analysis, and editing and proofreading. Many
services will provide help in more than one of these categories.

If you are having a block writing the thesis, dissertation coaches can
help. They have experience in helping you organize your workspace and
time so that you can write, and check up on you to make sure that you
are meeting your goals. The All But Dissertation website has a
matching program to dissertation coaches:
They also have Dissertation Survival Guide newsletter (archived):
And free teleconferenced dissertation workshops:

Help with statistics is often available through your university's
statistics department. The Alliance of Statistics Consultants provides
help with statistical problems:

Links to dissertation coaches and consultants are available here:
]

Also consider peer-based help on your thesis. An excellent resource
for those finishing the dissertation is PhinisheD, a discussion and
support group for those finishing their theses. In addition to the
discussion boards, there is an extensive collection of dissertation
related links and a collection of FAQs. The boards are international,
and there are people in the UK system that will know your educational
system.
PhinisheD: [ http://www.phinished.org/ ]
PhinisheD Links: [ http://www.phinished.org/links/ ]
PhinisheD FAQs: [ http://www.phinished.org/faqs/ ]

I have personally used the Phinished website and All But Dissertation
newsletters, and highly recommend them. I have known people that have
participated in the All But Dissertation teleconferenced workshops,
and found them helpful.

If you would like to avoid getting marked down for presentational
errors, you might wish to consider hiring a professional proofreader,
especially if you need to conform to APA 5th Edition, or some other
specificied formatting standard. www.scribendi.com does special rates
for students.
