Question ID: 244056
Specifically, step by step, how do I go about burning a number of "slide
shows" I've set up in Adobe Photoshop Album 1.0 on to a CD? I'm using
TDK
software with Ahead Nero Express. All I've been able to do is burn
each individual photo. How can I get the Adobe slide shows to transfer
as a "moving" slide show on to the CD?

After you have created your slide show, and you get to the step
"publish your slide show" have you tried using the option "burn"
there? Or have you been saving your slideshow as a pdf and then
burning it with your burning software?

Hi morrie-ga!

You stated that you were using Ahead Nero Express. I am assuming that
you are using Nero to burn copies of your slideshow pdf's to disk.
Perhaps you should try using the Adobe Photoshop Album to burn the
disks instead.
According to Adobe,
(http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/pdfs/photoshopalbum_aag.pdf)
There should'nt be a need to use any other 3rd party burning software.
They state that, "Burn a DVD or VideoCD to show on your TV or computer
with any compatible player, complete with sound and video. No extra
disk burning software required — Photoshop Album does it all."

Step by Step instructions to create a slideshow and burn it to disk
using Adobe Photoshop Album:

1. Start Creations Wizard
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/createworkspace.gif

2. Choose the template "slideshow"
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/creation01.jpg

3. Choose your slideshow style according to your personal preference
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/creation02.jpg

4. Customize your slideshow (step 3 in the creations wizard)
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/creation03.jpg
Give your Title page a name, choose how many photos per page, choose
background music if desired, Choose your transition (fade ect) and
page duration (how long a page appears before going to the next page)
I would suggest checking the following boxes as well...
*Include play controls
*Start slideshow automatically.

5. Preview your slideshow
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/creation04.jpg

6. Publish your slideshow (step 5 in the creations wizard)
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/creation05.jpg

7. Choose the option to "burn" (4th option down, found on the right
hand side)

8. A "select disc Settings box will come up, where you select your
available cd drives to use, and which media you wish to record in.
Select the appropriate drive (the one which you use to burn cd's with)
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/createburn.gif

9. Choose the format, you can either choose to burn a cd to be viewed
on a computer, or burn a video cd to view on a dvd player.

10. Click the "ok" button to begin burning. (make sure media is in rom
drive before starting this process)

Troubleshooting:
Once burned, if your slideshow does not play how you had intended it
(ie only shows individual pictures, and not as a slideshow)
Then it may be due to an older version of Adobe Acrobat reader.

Here is a copy of a working pdf slideshow
(http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/AdobePhotoshopAlbum/images/Tammy.pdf)
Try viewing this slideshow and see if it works, if the pdf file does
not act as a slideshow, then proceed to the next step.

Updating Adobe Reader:
The latest version (Adobe reader 6.0) can be found at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html
The newest version of the Adobe Reader allows you to,
"Display Adobe Photoshop® Album slide shows and electronic cards and
export images for online photo processing (online photo services vary
regionally) "

If for some reason downloading the latest version of Adobe reader is
not possible, then you might want to consider installing the free
Image Viewer 4.0 plug in.

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/download.html#downloads
"Viewing slide shows and electronic cards created with Photoshop
Album:
In order to view files and experience audio, video, and transitions in
slide shows and electronic cards created with Adobe® Photoshop® Album
software, you need to download and install either the free Image
Viewer 4.0 plug-in or the latest version of free Adobe Reader®
software with advanced options."
(If you don’t have Adobe Reader, are using a version earlier than 5.x,
or are a Mac OS X user, you will need to download the latest version
of Acrobat Reader. )

Many thanks.Your directions are excellent but when I followed your
suggestion to bypass Nero, I get the following for many of the
photos:"jpg non-standard aspect ratio, will be severely cropped or.jpg
is below the optimum resolution for printing at this size or.jpg is
low resolution and will not display well at this size." Haven't any
idea what this all means or what to do about it. There is nothing in
Adobe Help about this. Also, most important,I wish to put a number of
consecutive short slide shows on one CD. Nero provides for
interrupting the burning process which is one of the reasons I
installed it. Can I do that with Adobe? Any help with these two
questions would be most appreciated since what was supposed to be an
easy project has turned into a major headache.

morrie,
Let me play around with it today and see what I can find out. Can
you by any chance tell me the size of the pictures that give you the
errors? (example 439px by 569px ect) As for whether APA will give you
the option of adding additional slide shows to a cd before finalizing
the cd, I am not sure. I haven't been able to test that due to the
fact that my burner is being used by a machine other than the one I am
on now. However, one would think that it should be an option. It only
seems practical. :-) But since practical often doesn't come in to play
when it comes to software, I would suggest testing it.

Here are a few questions that you can answer, that might better help
me in understanding the cause of the problem.

1.)If you were to create a slideshow, and just choose to save it to
your PC. What happens when you go back and open the slideshow? Does
the pdf play as a slideshow?
(By all rights, if you are able to view it and verify that it was
saved correctly, and is working fine, then it regardless of what
software you used to burn it, it should not change the
quality/contents of the pdf file.)
2.) The slideshows that you burned previously, and found they were not
viewable as slideshows, were these discs played on your computer, or
someone elses? (If it was on someone else's computer, then I would
have to say that it is probably going to be due to the fact that their
Adobe Reader needs to be upgraded or they need to install the image
viewer plug in.)

Let me know as soon as you can, and in the mean time I will keep
experimenting with the software and searching for a solution!
Thanks again!

Thanks again -your directions are excellent. I followed them, burned
one slideshow on to a CD using only Adobe Workshop and, yes, when I
played the CD back, the pd played as a slideshow. (I think all that
other jazz about incorrect sizes probably relates to printing photos.)
However,I'm back to square one because as far as I can tell, Adobe's
process can't be interrupted so all it burnt was one short slideshow
on to the CD. Since I have 750 slides organized in a series of 30
short slideshows (each representing a specific year)which I want to
put on one or two CDs, how do I integrate the Nero software, which
allows interrupted burning, with Adobe Workshop to do this? A good
question,indeed!

morrie,
When the Adobe Photoshop album creates a slideshow on a cd, the file
is an mpeg. However, if your going to save a slideshow you have
created, the only option is to save it is as a pdf file. One option
you could try is to take all the saved pdf slideshows and burn them to
disc using nero. To play them, you would have to go to "My computer"
select the cd rom drive, right click on it, and choose either open or
explore. This should bring up the contents of the disk. Then you will
have the entire selection of slideshows to choose from. To play the
one you want, simply double click on that file. Before trying this, I
would suggest you try and play the pdf slideshows first, to verify
they were saved properly, and that you have the correct version of
adobe reader. If the pdf's do not play as slideshows, I would suggest
upgrading the adobe reader to version 6, and try running them again.
The burning process itself should not alter the pdf files, so as long
as they are saved correctly, then they should be viewable once burned.
You will be able to to get several slideshows on a disc (depending on
the capacity of the media you use, and the size of your files) but the
downfall to this is that the slideshows will not autoplay, you will
have to doubleclick on a file, let it play, then go to another ect.
It is unfortunate that the burning feature within APA doesn't allow
for more than one slideshow to be burned on each disc. But this only
version 1.0, so perhaps this might be a feature in a future release?

Good luck!
Thanks,

chellphill - I appreciate your good wishes,sorry I didn't get back to
you sooner. I followed your suggestion and downloaded all 30
slideshows into my hard drive as pdf files. Was sure you had it solved
,got all set up only to be brought up short by the message from the
burner,"Nero doesn't recognize this file" Now I've been hunting around
in all Adobe sites to find out how to convert pdf files to html to see
if that will do it.So far, without much success. I am hoping there's
got to be be a solution somewhere for what is,basically,a simple
procedure. Any more suggestions would be most welcome since I've
invested a lot of time and quite a few bucks in this project and would
hate to give up on it.

Hi morrie,
When you are going to create the cd, are you trying to open the
pdf files with nero? And when choosing what kind of cd to create, what
type of cd are you choosing? For example, you should be able to just
create a "backup" cd, of all those pdf files. Nero should be able to
just copy all of the files. But if your getting an error message about
it not recognizing that file type, or an unsupported file format...
then it sounds like Nero is either trying to "preview" the file, or
it's trying to convert it to another format.
While I am waiting for your reply, I will continue looking into this.
Thanks so much for you patience! Don't worry, we will get this figured
out!
Thanks again,
chellphill-ga

Hi morrie,
I forgot to ask before, but what is the exact version of your Nero
software?
(Version name and release number.) I also need to know if you have
downloaded any patches/updates or plug-ins for your version of Nero.
Thanks!

The worlds most expensive way first!

If your video card has NTSC or SVIDEO out, and you happen to have a
video camera (preferably Digital) laying around, you can simply
videotape your slideshow and burn it to the CD. Problem solved.

There are ways that don't involve extra hardware, such as programs
which capture parts of the screen to an AVI, typically used to evade
copy protection on streaming media. Some of the DIVX creation tools
can do this.
