Question ID: 244615
I'm driving from Denver to LA in a week and I'm a little unsure of the
best route. I realize that there are probably multiple routes and
some of it depends on what type of drive you like, etc. So I'm not
asking how to get there but rather am looking for a resource on the
Internet that would helpful in answering a question like this. For
instance, perhaps some sort of discussion community or Usenet group
where I could ask this and get a quality response.

This would also be helpful for future reference when I need to drive
somewhere. And I do realize that Mapquest provides route info but I
want the assurance of someone who has actually driven the route to
make sure it's the right one considering my circumstances.

Members of AAA can have a "triptik" prepared that will show the
recommended route from one city to another. This can be requested
online or at a local office. Membership costs around $50 / year in my
area.

Thanks for that info. I'm not a AAA member right now but that might
not be a bad investment. In the meantime, might there be a cheaper
way to find this out?

I suggest the CompuServe Travel Forum, at
  http://go.compuserve.com/TravForum

It is not necessary to be a member of CompuServe or of CompuServe's
parent company America Online (which also operates AOL) to enter and
use the forum. You will, however, need an AOL screen name, but you can
obtain one of those at no charge.

Go to Messages and post a message in the United States section.

Hey highroute. I did as you recommended and I got back a pretty good
response fairly quickly. That does seem like a great resource. If
you would like to submit your response as an answer to my question I
would accept it. Thanks!

Yahoo and Mapquest will both give you detailed driving directions from
an address in Denver to an address in LA.

They will give you the "shortest" route, but does not include
information on, say, roadworks or the scenic route.

Mapquest driving directions at: http://www.mapquest.com/directions/

Yahoo driving directions at: http://maps.yahoo.com/dd

best wishes, intotravel

Also check out http://www.freetrip.com

Whenever I go on a roadtrip, I usually use Yahoo!, and verify it with Freetrip.com.
