"The actual future of small business on the Internet may not lie in
the selling of products, but with the communication of products and
customer interaction. Internet sites will be common communication
tools with customers seeking hard to find products and looking for
information. A web site may be more valuable to the small business
owner as an advertisement and information tool rather than a sales

indicates. The company's new white paper, "Hitting the Target: Local

For Small Businesses, "Traditional" Advertising Is Still King
http://www.constat.com/news/newsletter/angle1001.html
"As we look to the future of online and "offline" advertising among
small businesses, we can review the media used by these companies over
the past two years to get a better understanding of which media they
will be using in the near future. Clearly, online services exploded
over the past five years, and small businesses were quick to adopt
some of these new applications and solutions, especially e-mail and
company Web sites. At the same time when it comes to advertising,
small businesses have not turned their backs on traditional media, but
rather maintained their faith in these options, preferring to assume
somewhat of a conservative "wait and see" attitude towards the
Internet and other "new media" solutions..." --> see more at URL

Reinvention of the Automotive Repair Industry
http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/sept2002/dotcom.cfm
"But more importantly, the Internet is fundamentally changing the way
we do business. According to Forrester Research, 60 percent of small
businesses will have a Web presence by year-end 2004. And currently,
66 percent of small businesses now purchase goods and services online.
What does all this mean? It means that small businesses - more
importantly, independent repair facilities in the automotive industry
- are poised to become major players in the recurrence of another
dot-com revolution. The Internet and all its capabilities are far from
defunct. In fact, the possibilities are just beginning to surface
within the industry. With changing business practices and the scarcity
of time that affects us all, the Internet is continually delivering
rich content and business solutions that can successfully be used by
owners and managers of automotive repair shops..." --> see more at URL

Internet Blues
http://research.moore.sc.edu/Publications/B&EReview/BE43_3/net.htm
"Small businesses make the "local" long distance calls (calls that are
long enough to be charged but too short to be long distance), pay the
premium prices, and add the volume a local phone company needs to
cover its investments. Large corporations can avoid paying higher
prices. But most businesses cannot get volume discounts or build
their own infrastructure. Small businesses put up with this because
they need phones to survive. They supported a monopoly structure that
allowed the telephone company to grow. But most small businesses do
not need the Internet. Many small businesses have Web sites. Some do
research on the Web. Most try to collect sales leads via the Web. Many
offer products on their Web sites. But few businesses find the Web to
be a critical or even important component of their revenue or profit.
If individual users and small businesses will not support the
Internet, then who will?..." --> see more at URL

companies taking business processes onto the Internet, streamlining

High tech's latest bright idea: Shared computing

"But eventually, small businesses and even consumers may be able to
tap the processing power of a supercomputer as tech companies build
shared-power networks for public use. PC maker Gateway recently
announced plans to rent out the muscle of 7,800 PCs that sit idle at
night in its stores. Someday, "You will plug into the wall (to get
computing power) the same way you do to get electrical power," says

The Web and Small Business Part I
http://www.techweb.com/smallbiz/tscuts7.html
"Do you want the truth? The 'information highway' has stagnated into
little more than a collection of billboards. Far too many businesses
support web sites because 'everybody else does'. That means the
technology industry didn't do a very good job teaching the small
business world about this new business medium. The promises of using
the web to move beyond the marketing
brochure and generate media and create a media outlet are still
promises, and the technology industry and the dot com mess isn't
totally to blame..." --> see more at URL
