How do I get dual display working on my IBM Thinkpad? Its an A22m,
model no. 2628-STU. By dual display, I mean that I want to connect an
external monitor to my laptop, and have my workspace displayed across
both, the built-in LCD screen and the LCD monitor. For example, I'd
like to be able to see MS Word on the LCD screen and Excel on the
external monitor. I use Windows 2000.

Howdy pittwrds,

What have you tried to date, if anything, such as attaching
an external monitor to your laptop, settings, etc. and any
results you might had?

Thanks! denco-ga

I tried attaching an external monitor. Also tried updating BIOS and
driver.

I can get multiple display going. That is, getting the same stuff to
show up simultaneously on the LCD and external monitor.

As I understand it, if the dual display setting is working, I should
get a a "monitor 1" and 'monitor 2" choice when I go to
Control Panels - Display

I don't get this option. Hope this clarification helps

Greatly appreciate your patience with these diagnostics, pittwrds.

After you hookup an external monitor on your laptop, please go through
the following steps.

- Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
The Control Panel window appears.
- Double-click the Display icon.
- Click Settings at the top, and then click the Advanced button. Another
display properties window will appear.

Is there an ATI Display tab at the top of this window?

Thanks! denco-ga

There is a tab called 'ATI Display'. The 'ATI' part appears as a logo,
with the letters 'ATI' in white on a red background. I also have this
logo displayed in the bottom right - hand portion of my screen.

Howdy pittwrds!

I think we are getting close; appreciate your patience.

If you click on the "ATI Displays" tab, do you get a display like this?

If so, try the following:

- Click the top left corner of both the Monitor and Panel buttons.
- The word Primary will no longer be grayed out.
- Click Apply and then click OK.
- Click OK to return to your desktop.
- Both displays should now work.

Then, "right click" on the desktop, left click on Properties on the
menu that appears, and then select the Settings tab.

Does it now have the two monitors showing? If it does, you can then
drag the monitors to their proper places, if needed.

Thanks! denco-ga

I did the steps you suggested. However, when I go to display
properties, I only have one monitor showing up.

I should clarify that I think I know how to get dual display going in
general. I don't know how to get it going on my particular laptop. Do
I need a different driver or something?

I also have a A22m 2628. I currently run a dual display setup on my
desktop and know what you mean. For clarification I will call what we
are talking about the "extended dual display" because I know you are
not just trying to get a second copy screen running.

I am afraid that what you are trying to do is impossible. To run an
"extended dual display" a computer needs to separate video output
signals. In the case of desktops, you usually have two video cards
(ex. agp + pci) or you have a video card with two display outputs (ATI
All-In-Wonder). From what I understand the A22m (at least for mine
anyway) has 8MB of ram. With this and due to signal strength being a
notebook computer, the A22m is not designed to handle the "extended
dual display" mode. I've had problems even trying to use the external
display with a projector -- due to signal strength issues.

I don't have all the answers, but I hope that helps. Not completely
sure how this google answers works, but I logged in because I thought
I could help. =)
