I am looking for the title of a Drifter's track. I originally had this
song on an 8-track cartridge, a K-Tel compilation, but cannot remember
the title of the 8-track album or the tune.

The chorus had the lines "if you really love me, love me for what I
am." It is possible that the line could be "if you really love me,
love me for who I am."

I can also remember that the title of the track did not match the
chorus, i.e., the song is not called "if you really love me."

I need this song for a wedding - the price reflects the importance and urgency.

Further info for any researchers interested in taking this one on:

I consider myself a pretty good 'Googler' (I remember the 'net before
http and the www !), but I had no luck with standard searches. They
mostly threw up songs by Stevie Wonder, the Carpenters and a
little-known Irish big-band, Joe Dolan and the Drifters.

I have asked this question on oldies Bulletin Boards, and some members
suggested I might look for Drifters members who left the band at some
point and had their track included on the compilation.

Can I suggest Clyde McPhatter and Ben E King as possible artists, but
the song was *definitely* on a Drifters compilation 8-track I found in
the back of a 1976 Cadillac I bought in England during 1995.

P.S....!

Any links to sites which sell the recording I am interested in will
earn the researcher a $25 tip from a grateful groom who wants his
bride to remember a chilly starlit night in a convertible Cadillac
after watching the sun set to this tune :)

Would this be the 8-Track?

Difficult to say - my 8 track had most of the label ripped off it,
unfortunately. I found the 8 track next to the spare tyre in the trunk
of that Cadillac, and it was not in the best of condition. It would
often change tracks itself, and we ended up calling the Caddie
'Christine', after the film/book, as it appeared to like certain songs
and radio stations :)

If you could find a track list for that 8-track......

I don't really want an 8-track to be honest. I need the title of that
song to get it on CD/MP3/Vinyl to be played at our wedding.

Cheers

Looking further at the link you provided, that is a genuine Atlantic 8
track. The song I'm looking for was on a K-Tel compilation, but as I
said, I'm not interested in the physical 8-track, just the song !

Hi magnox,
I have contacted the only surviving original memeber of the Drifters,
Bill Pinkney with your inquiry and will let you know when I receive a
response.

Hello magnox-ga,

Are you certain about the line being "if you really love me, love me
for what I am." or "if you really love me, love me for who I am"?

Could it be something similar like "If you're gonna love me, love the
life I lead"?

Googlenut - spot on.

I have been actively looking for this for several months and, despite
my incorrectly remembered lyrics, you have found it.

Your link to the audio clip makes certain the track is the one I am
looking for. The links to the lyrics and the companies selling the
track get you the promised tip. I've been using the 'net and search
engines for more years than I care to remember and I couldn't figure
this one out.

Exceptional work, well worth the money for the wedding.

:)
