Hi jhabley,
Thank you for your question.
The following is the result of my research regarding an ISBN.
What is an ISBN?
ISBN stands for "International Standard Book Number." The ISBN is a
10-digit identification system that allows booksellers and libraries
to easily differentiate between books and other media when ordering.
The ISBN refers to the specific edition and is usually located on the
back of the book and/or on the copyright page.

The International Book Number (ISBN) is a 10-digit number that
uniquely identifies books published internationally. The ISBN system
was established in 1968 as a standard identification system and is
used to identify a title or edition of a title from a specific
publisher. Each number is unique to that edition, ie: a hardcover, CD,
or eBook format of the same title would each have their own unique
number. Today all book databases use the ISBN system making marketing
and distribution far more efficient.
If you are publishing a book and want to make sales to bookstores or
simply want people to be able to find your book you will need an ISBN.
Without an ISBN your book will not be recognized in the book databases
and this would undoubtedly hurt your sales.

The International Standard Book Number is unique number that
identifies a published work. It is usually found above the bar code
and on the credits page. The ISBN number assures that your book will
be properly cataloged. It is also important for proper bibliographic
listing in libraries, catalogs and other directories. First Publishers
can arrange for the assignment of an ISBN number. You will also need a
Bar Code of the ISBN number and selling price printed on the back
cover of your book. This enables bookstores and online booksellers to
inventory and process the orders...
There are four parts to an ISBN. (Example: (ISBN) 1-22065-024-6) The
first number (1) is the group or country identifier which identifies a
national or geographic grouping of publishers. The second number
(22065) identifies a particular publisher. The third number (024)
identifies a specific title or edition of a title. The fourth number
(4) is the check digit arrived at by following a special algorithm.

ISBN denotes International Standard Book Number, which is a code
specifically allocated to every book published. The number is assigned
during the production of the book and accompanies the publication from
that point on. You cannot sell a book into the retail market if it
does not have an ISBN.

Do I Need an ISBN for my Self-Published Material?
Must you have an ISBN for your book? No, there is no legal requirement
for having an ISBN. Whether or not you apply for an ISBN depends
mostly on how you plan to sell your material. If you are going to sell
your material at workshops, through direct mail, or over the Internet,
then you are not likely to need an ISBN.
But if you plan on selling your material to retail chains, libraries,
or specialty stores, you will probably need an ISBN. In some cases,
catalogers also require ISBNs. Why? These businesses rely on the ISBN
for tracking inventory, ordering, and general identification.
