How many U.S. stock mutual funds are there?  (I am trying to find out
how many U.S. stock, i.e. equity mutual funds there are.  Not bond or
other funds).

You realize that there are mixed functions with bonds and stocks both?
 Should they be included?  And how about hedge funds (which mix in
options)?

In the July, 2003 issue of Money Magazine, on Page 49, they wrote: "T.
Rowe Price's Capital Appreciation has gone 12 years without a yearly
loss - a feat no other U.S. stock fund can match."  But nowhere in the
article do they say "how many U.S. stock funds there are.  I am trying
to figure out about how many US stock funds they are including in this
statistic.

I know they are NOT talking about hedge funds (because I know a lot of
hedge funds that have 12 years without a yearly loss).  But I assume
they are including US stock and bond combined.

While researching something else this morning, I found that the
Standard & Poor's/Business Week web pages have a search capability for
S&P data that yields the answer:
7,303 U.S. equity mutual funds

If you go to this site, you'll want to click on the "Fund Screener"
link in the 3rd column:
BusinessWeek Online
"Investing: Funds"
http://www.businessweek.com/investor/funds.html

In the "Mutual Fund Search" category you can choose between:
*  US equity
*  US fixed income
*  International equity
*  International fixed income
*  Money market

The U.S. equity funds show 7,303 listed.

I realize Morningstar has a lot about mutual funds but I did not see
the answer to my question:  How many US Stock Equity funds are there
(excluding hedge funds and including both stock & bond funds).  I
don't want to count money market funds because I am writing a paper
regarding Money Magazine's July article above and I am trying to
figure out even an approximate total.
