where can I find a free list of all US cities? May accept a list for
sale if no one is successful finding a free list. thanks.

Thank you for an interesting question.  I have previously answered a
similar question.  The United States government offers a list of US
cities, along with extraneous information, at
<<http://www.census.gov/ftp/pub/tiger/tms/gazetteer/places2k.txt>>. 
Since you indicated that you only need a list of cities, I had
converted them into a text file with just names and states using a
Java program I wrote.  You can download this file at
<<http://www.geocities.com/secret901/places2kkedited3.txt>>.  Please
note that cities in Puerto Rico are included into this list as well. 
If you want to remove them, please let me know.

I hope that this meets your needs.  If you want the list in some other
format, please use the "Request for Clarification" feature to let me
know and I'll be happy to comply.
