I have a Dell laptop and the function key is locked so that when I
type a letter on the laptop keyboard, I get a character that is the
number on that key. I want to unlock the function key on the laptop
keyboard.

Hello:
Usually there is a button/key on the keyboard to set the keybard in
function mode, if you press again that button/key, the keyboard will
be restored to its previous state. Is that what you want?

Regards.

Hello there. The first thing you can try is press and hold on the FN
key then hit on the num lock key at the same time when you are already
on the desktop. Try to test the keys on a word document. If this one
does not work, you have to remove all power sources from your
computer. Which means remove the battery and the disconnect the ac
adapter from the computer. Then, press and hold on the power button
for 10 to 15 seconds. This will reset your computer. To test if this
works, reattach the ac adapter and turn the system on. Test the
keyboard again on a blank word document. If this does not work, flash
the bios of your computer. The flash bios depends on the type of Dell
laptop you have. You may go to support.dell.com or
premiersupport.dell.com to know what latest bios upgrade is available.
If this does not work, I do suggest that you call Dell Technical
Support for more troubleshooting. They may end up replacing the
keyboard of you laptop. Hope this helps!
