Ignoring man, which animal species accounts for the largest kill of wild Gazelles?

If data is not available, an educated guess will suffice.

Hi Bryan :)

Very kind of you to accept my comments as an answer - many thanks.

<<I've had a quick look across the net re: your question and the most
commonly repeated reference with respect to your question seems to be
linked to big cats (e.g. cheetahs, jaguars, etc) and wild dogs (e.g.
hyenas, dingoes, etc).

This is not an "educated guess" by any means, simply a snapshot of the
most common references that I happened to come across during a 10
minute search.>>

Some of references I found were very similar to THX1138-ga's
references. For example, the Animal Planet subsection of the Discovery
Channel's website found at:

http://animal.discovery.com/

has quite a few references to leopards and cheetahs consuming gazelle
as part of their diet including;

Leopards:

http://animal.discovery.com/fansites/jeffcorwin/carnival/feline/leopard.html

and

Cheetahs:

http://animal.discovery.com/guides/mammals/habitat/tropgrassland/cheetah.html

The Catz Den website at:

http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Teahouse/3446/spotcat.html

also makes reference to cheetahs hunting gazelle.

References to hyenas (in this case, Spotted Hyenas) hunting gazelle:

http://www.thebigzoo.com/Animals/Spotted_Hyena.asp

References to wild dogs (in this case, African wild dogs) hunting
gazelle:

http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/vecase/Behavior/Spring2003/gentzler/Hunting.htm

Kind regards
:) jem-ga

p.s. Had a feeling you were up to something ;)

Search strategy:

Keywords: largest kill of gazelle

Keywords:

kills most gazelles

Hi, Jem!

Great to hear from you again.

Please post your comment as an answer - before somebody else does.

How did you guess that I'd been 'up to something'?

This is scary!

Kindest regards

Bryan

Hello probonopublico,

I also researched your question for sometime, and couldn't come up
with a definitive answer but what I found out was this. The number of
cheetahs and lions are similar in Eastern Africa, and lions tend to go
for slighhtly larger animals like zebras etc...(although they do eat
gazelles as well) I would guess it's cheetahs, but of course it
depends on the species of gazelle, and where it is in the world,
Africa, Mongolia etc.
There is also a bird called the Martial Eagle that preys on gazelle,
although I doubt the number of kills in this way would be very high
(but quite a site to see I should imagine!)
http://www.birdtreks.com/itin/keea01.html (No.15)

Try this sesarch
 "prey * gazelles"
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&as_qdr=all&q=+%22prey++*++gazelles%22&btnG=Google+Search
And you'll see it mentions mostly cheetahs. I'd go for cheetahs (I
think!)

All the best

Apparently U.S. marines are enjoying Saddam's gazelles as a feast:

I cannot help wondering: if bacteria are considered an animal species,
might they not kill more wild gazelles than do predators?
