Some time ago, I saw a Question and Answer on GA on the best way to
add password protection to a PC but, of course, not being a
Researcher, Daisy can't find it now that I want to refer to it.

I have a stand-alone PC running WIN98SE and I now want to give my
night staff the use of the office - but not the computer.

Partly because there's confidential stuff on the machine and partly
because there may be a risk of them screwing things up.

I also want to show Daisy how stupid she is.

Hello probonopublico,

Thank you for your question.

I went to the main Google Answers page and searched Answered questions
for "password pc".

http://answers.google.com/answers/main

I found 81 hits. Looking through the results, this is the most likely
candidate that you seek:

Passwording folders & files

An excellent answer form sublime1 that deals with Windows 98 and
password security.

This answer might also be of interest to you:

Hi Bryan :)

Re: your comment: <<I now want to give my night staff the use of the
office - but not the computer.>>

A shareware programme (15 day free trial) which you might find useful
can be found at:

http://www.pclok.com/index.html

Excerpt from their site:

<<PC Lok™ requires a password as soon as Windows loads, keeping
unauthorized users from accessing ANY of your files and records>>

Programme is compatible with Windows 98. Once trial expires, full
version of programme can be purchased online for $23.95.

Here's a free way ...

Assuming you don't have to login when you first start windows, I think
the simplest way would be to set a screensaver password. If you're
concerned that the people might shut off the computer and restart to
get by the screensaver, you can also (on almost all computers) set
BIOS security that will prevent the computer from booting without the
right password. Watch the screen when you boot the computer and look
for "Press F2 to enter Setup" or something similar. There should be an
option for "set BIOS password" or something similar.

Important note if you do this: DON'T FORGET THAT PASSWORD!

Hi, Greenbriel

Many thanks for your Comment.

I will give that a go!

(It's sound better than simply 'hiding' files.)
