My company has two servers colocated at a hosting company. We were thinking about putting a Cisco PIX 501 in place to help with security and VPN. I have a couple of general questions: 1) Can a PIX respond to multiple external IP addresses. For example: 209.W.X.Y port 80 -> Machine A 209.W.X.Z port 80 -> Machine B I understand that the PIX itself will only have one IP address, correct? That is the one you would use for configuring? And you can configure it remotely? 2) Can anyone give me a feel for what kind of VPN performance we can get? We have tried the software only VPN (Win 2K server) and it is pretty dismal. Our ISP has huge bandwidth, but most of the employees connect with cable modems. Will we have OK VPN performance? Enough to run Outlook? Thanks! |

Different PIX models specify a different number of "interfaces", so if you have three interfaces you can have three IP's for your mailserver, webserver, and some other server. We used to run Outlook 2000 over a 128k frame relay. It was annoying but we got by. Outlook 2003 is supposed to be more bandwidth-efficient too -- see recent statement by MSFT dissing outlook express as obselete. Are you running exchange 5.5. If you are, upgrade to 2000. Outlook web access is a lot better. |
