could be paid.

Hello commensalism-ga:

Could you please clarify three things:

By "drawings," you mean artistic drawings? Or do you mean general
graphics artist work, or commercial art? (I can certainly find sites
where you should be able to land contract jobs for commercial art
jobs.)

Do you only do *drawings* with pencil or charcoal? Or do you also do
computer graphics work? Researchers need to know so that we search
according to the correct criteria. If you could give us a better idea
of the kinds of art work you do, it will be much easier for one of us
to find sites with jobs well-suited to your skills.

You said ". . .where my services would be needed to make my own
designs or any design." By "any design" do you mean that you are
willing to make a design according to the hirer's specifications, in
addition to seeking jobs where you would be responsible for thinking
up the design as well as making it?

Sincerely,
nancylynn-ga

Hello commensalism-ga:

Thank you for clarifying your question.

I've found some promising sites where you can enroll and apply for
contract jobs, and other sites where you can subscribe to job
databases.

But you should also consider setting up your own Web site featuring
samples of your work. There are quite a few Internet directories that
will provide links to your site, allowing those seeking an artist with
your skills and interests to easily find you.

Please note that the geographic location of many of these employers
and the jobs they offer is irrelevant, as most freelance jobs are
off-site and can be performed by artists anywhere.

Recruiters/ Match-Making Sites:
These sites will review your work and decide if they want to market
it. They take a cut of your fee as their commission upon selling your
work:

PortSort Illustration:
http://www.portsort.com/
is a match-making site for artists and those who need to hire artists.
Portsort has categories for artists who work in your medium, pencil
drawings. Here, you can submit photos of your portfolio online for
prospective clients to view. Clients will be able to find your work by
searching PortSort under style, subject, and media (such as "pencil)."

PortSort takes 25% of your fee as its commission. To apply as an
artist/illustrator at PortSort, go to this page:
http://www.portsort.com/attention_illustrators.cfm

FEI International accepts submissions for review, then attempts to
sell that art work. FEI takes 40% of the employer's fee for its
commission. For information see:
http://www.fotopressnews.com/fei_art.html
and click on "Info. for Artists" at the top right of the page. That
will lead you to a link that explains all the details of having FEI
market your work.

Creative Freelancers:
http://www.freelancers.com/
At this page, you can fill out a profile form to register as a
freelancer at the site:
http://www.freelancers.com/newlisting.asp

Freelance Exchange:
http://www.freelance-exchange.com/freelance.html
has jobs for illustrators.
See:
http://www.freelance-exchange.com/career.html
You must have attended an art program and have three years
professional experience to qualify as a freelance artist with this
firm.

The i Spot:
http://www.theispot.com/
where you can display samples of your work. See:
http://www.theispot.com/about/
for options about displaying your work and negotiating for contract
jobs. The i Spot gets 25% of your fee as its commission.

Two general resources:
Planet Cartoonist is a good general information site for people
looking for freelance illustration gigs:
http://www.planetcartoonist.com/services/promo/
At left see links for "Markets" and "Promotion" and "Freelance Zone"
(job links).

2003 Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market (Writers Digest Books: 2003,
editor Mary Cox). Offers a comprehensive look at numerous markets
where artists can sell their work:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1582971226/ref=cm_bg_f_1/104-7090664-7691121?v=glance

I also think respree-ga's comment about approaching publishers is also
very much worth pursuing.

A note of caution: I'm a freelancer myself and we are very vulnerable
to scams. Before beginning any project, make sure you have a signed
contract and that it's a contract you fully understand and believe is
fair. Before paying membership fees to some of the above sites, you
may want to check them out with the Better Business Bureau
(http://www.bbb.org), or go to your favorite search engine and type in
the name of the outfit along with the term "scam."

The Graphics Artist Guild seems to me an especially good resource
because it provides job leads and guidance on job contracts. Plus, it
may enable you to hook up with more seasoned pros who can offer you
some good advice.

I'm afraid I couldn't find any jobs or jobs sites related to art work
with African themes. It's certainly possible that some of the job
sites I gave you will occasionally have assignments that involve
"African styles" and themes.

Also, as you can imagine, the real demand these days seems to be for
computer graphics artists. As someone who appreciates all of the arts,
I do hope the days of the canvas, paint, pencil, and charcoal aren't
numbered!

I hope my research is of help to you. If I failed to fully address
your concerns, please post a Request For Clarification so that I can
do additional research, before you submit a rating.

Search Strings Used:

"jobs drawings pencil charcoal"
"jobs artists"
"freelance artists"
"freelance illustrators"
"freelance illustrators 'African themes'"

Hello commensalism-ga:

I'm sorry you're so disappointed in my answer. After reading your
response, I tried these search strings:

"upload artwork"
submit artwork sale"
"accepting artwork"

I found some additional sites that, like previous sites I'd given you
-- such as PortSort -- enable you to display and sell your artwork.
You can upload to many of these sites.

Art-Bazaar is seeking artists to submit works to its online gallery:
http://www.art-bazaar.com/

Art-Bazaar takes a 15% commission from each sale you make. To learn
more about the terms, read the artist's contract at:
http://www.art-bazaar.com/agreement.htm

Also read the "How It Works" page at:
http://www.art-bazaar.com/howitworks.htm

Fulcrum Gallery is a no-charge online gallery where you can display
your work for sale. See:
http://www.fulcrumgallery.com/default.aspx

Read the artist FAQ at:
http://www.fulcrumgallery.com/article.aspx?page=14161

Eugenia's Art Gallery reviews submitted artwork and, if your work is
deemed worthy of exhibition, you can display and sell your drawings
there. Eugenia's fee is 30% of each sale you make. See:
http://www.eugeniasartgallery.com/index.htm

To submit your work to Eugenia's, go to:
http://www.eugeniasartgallery.com/submit-art/index.htm

ArtShow.com is a fee-based gallery that accepts submissions for online
sale:
http://www.artshow.com/art_for_sale.html

Read this page to learn about the site's fees: $100 a year and a $120
"setup fee" for displaying your works:
http://www.artshow.com/infoartist.html

Alchemix.com accepts art from artists from around the world -- and
it's free:
http://www.alchemix.com/

See Alchemix.com's online store at:
http://www.alchemix.com/submit_art.html

Alchemix notes: "For work that you wish to make [art] for sale, please
note that Alchemix will assume no responsibility and that it will be
up to you to make whatever sale arrangements that need to be made."
E-mail contact information is available at the site for further
inquiry.

Affinity-Art is accepting artwork for sale online, at:
http://www.affinity-art.com/

Affinity-Art also acts as a matchmaker, pairing artists with paying
clients who need work done to specification.

Affinity-Art reviews and approves artists' work before allowing
artists to exhibit online. Read this page on how to submit your work
for review and join their artists' database. (They prefer to receive
submissions via snail mail):
http://www.affinity-art.com/submit.html

If you're a student at any high school or college -- anywhere in the
world -- you can upload your work at TheBigChoice.com's "Student Art"
site:
http://www.thebigchoice.com/Freetime/Student_Art.html
and
http://www.studentsart.com/

Consumers may browse the site and order your artwork which will be
printed as a poster (even though you don't have to submit your work as
a poster). You receive the royalties from sales. See the Submissions
page to learn how to submit your drawings:
http://www.tbsac.freeserve.co.uk/pub.htm

The U.K. site Art Mart:
http://www.art-mart.co.uk/index1.asp
will let you upload and display your work for potential buyers to
review and purchase.

Go to:
http://www.art-mart.co.uk/Submit.asp
to learn how to submit to Art Mart, and review their fees for
displaying and selling your work.

The Art Internet Database accepts submissions:
http://dart.fine-art.com/

You'll have to register there to navigate the site. To learn more
read:
http://www.fine-art.com/info.asp

Scroll that page and at left see "Sell Art." (That link will bring up
a range of membership options, from free to $24.95.)

Also at:
http://www.fine-art.com/info.asp
See a menu "Submit Your Inventory To d'Art". You'll have to register
to explore those options.

The Art Internet Database also has a message board where artists and
art buyers can post:
http://dart.fine-art.com/MessageList.asp?intboardid=17

This isn't necessarily all online work, but the Children's Book
Council has posted a list of publishers that are open to reviewing
artwork for publication:
http://www.cbcbooks.org/html/illustrators_guide.html

You have to contact each publisher to inquire how they want the
artwork to be submitted. In some cases, uploading or e-mailing
submissions may be fine.

The above sites all appear to be open to artists from around the
world.

Art One Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ, is accepting artwork for its online
gallery. The site notes: "Representing Artwork from students of
Arizona universities, community colleges, *and emerging* and local
artists since 1993." See the site at:
http://www.artonegalleryinc.com/index.php

Click on "Contact" to verify that non-local artists' work can
displayed at the site; I'm afraid that's not clear.

Just to highlight and reiterate some of the information I gave you
earlier:
You said in your clarification to me:

"i need sites where an artist services will be needed for pay.
i mean that if i am an artist {drawing}are there sites where my
services would be needed to make my own designs or any design and i
could be paid. i need as much as possible."

In the answer I posted on August 23rd, I gave you sites where
potential customers could view your uploaded work and, hopefully,
purchase the works, or hire you to do artwork for them, according to
their specifications.

The sites I gave you earlier included:

PortSort Illustration:
http://www.portsort.com/

FEI International:
http://www.fotopressnews.com/fei_art.html

The i Spot:
http://www.theispot.com/

The other sites I posted in my answer are places where you can
register your resume and, in some cases, upload samples of your work,
as well as bid on art jobs offered by clients from around the world.
Some of these sites, such as Creative Moonlighter and the Desktop
Group/Creative Bureau have fairly heavy traffic, and should provide
solid opportunities for freelance art jobs.

I also said:
"Please note that the geographic location of many of these employers
and the jobs they offer is irrelevant, as most freelance jobs are
OFF-SITE and can be performed by artists anywhere."

That applies to the sites I just posted in this clarification: most
are open to artists around the world. A few of them aren't clear on
that point -- I noted those -- and you'll have to e-mail the site
operator for more information.

I respectfully ask that you visit a few of the links I gave you
earlier to see if you do find any promising leads there, as I think
you will. I also think the online gallery sites I referred you to
earlier, and those I've just added, are exactly the types of sites
you're seeking -- as I understand your request.

If you are still not satisfied, please let me know, and I will ask
Google Answers' editors to withdraw my answer.

You might try submitting your artwork to an art publisher and get a
royalty each time your art print is sold. Here's an example of one
publisher who accepts artist submissions. All you need to do is
search for more. Keep in mind, however, the publisher is taking a
risk on publishing artists' works in terms of the investment
(inventory) they will be making on producing (actually reproducing)
your artwork, so they may be particular on who they accept (i.e. they
need to come to some sort of reasonable conclusion that there will be
a demand).
