Question ID: 248021
I need help creating a list of movie theater chains with screens in OR
near ANY of the following cities:
Inglewood CA
San Bernadino CA
Riverside CA
Here's what I need on each chain:
# of screens near each of the above three cities
contact info for company
is it owned by a parent company?
worldwide screens of company and (if applicable) parent company

Please read the above carefully... the screens don't have to be in the
above three cities, just near enough to go to the movies! They also
DON'T have to be near all the cities... just any one of them!

Go to it googlers!

Clarification of Question by thinksmile-ga on 23 Aug 2003 15:40 PDT
It looks like this question got locked up quick!

For bonus points: Can you give me any information on the financial
position of the companies you find?

If anybody understands the economics of the movie theater business I'd
be interested in their comments. I understand that when you buy a
movie ticket, about 60-80% goes to the studio, and only 20% goes to
the movie theatre chain company. If you happen to know a lot about
the economics of this business, or can suggest a link that breaks it
down, that would be great.

There was a flurry of bankruptcies in the industry as it transitioned
to new screen formats and overbuilt... But does that necessarily mean
these companies aren't making money? Perhaps they just needed to get
out of leases on outdated theaters... (sorry about the ruminating!)

Clarification of Question by thinksmile-ga on 24 Aug 2003 04:26 PDT
Hi I am new to google answers... If my question is locked, is someone
working on it? I thought it could only be locked for 4 hours?

Anybody out there reading this? :)

Clarification of Question by thinksmile-ga on 24 Aug 2003 16:02 PDT
Apparently no one is reading my question so I am going to try raising
the price!

I am new so if anyone can advise me on how much I need to pay to get
this question answered please do!

(I have already read google guidelines.)

Clarification of Question by thinksmile-ga on 24 Aug 2003 16:29 PDT
Ok, I've come up with a couple of items:

1) there is a previous question answer that was kind of
interesting--it suggested a zapdata search

2) The national association of theatre owners has a website...
perhaps I could contact the california branch (contact # is listed)
for more information

Seems silly I am doing my own research though :)

Hello thinksmile -

Questions of $100 or more are actually locked for 8 hours. A question
can take a lot more time than that, so a researcher might relock it
frequently. Also, at this time, this question is not locked, but that
might not mean a researcher isn't working on it.

If this particular question necessitates creating a manual list, it
would be difficult for a researcher to justify doing it at $100.
There are 445 theatres in Inglewood alone. Amassing a list of the
theatres and their contact information is doable manually. But
finding out if each is owned by a parent company as well as additional
data on worldwide screens of each company and (if applicable) parent
company is a different animal of a question.

To tackle this by seeking out sources that have databases of theatres,
it may require contacting companies that aren't open on a weekend
[which is when you posted your question].

Clarification of Question by thinksmile-ga on 24 Aug 2003 20:43 PDT
Its good to know someone is out there!

To clarify: There are no movie theaters in Inglewood. You say 445?
Where did you get that?

Also, I am interested in the chains, not the individual theatres
anyway. For example, I need contact information for Pacific Theaters
Corporation, not each of its 55 theaters (which are listed on its
website.)

If someone can give me even a partial answer for $100 that would be
fine... just note which aspects of the question are too much work for
$100.

Someone must have locked it up and given up, eh?

Hello there

Major theater chains doing business in Southern California are:
AMC Theaters
Century Theaters
Cinemark
CinemaStar Luxury Theaters
Krikorian Theatres
Laemmle Theatres
Landmark Theaters
Loews Cineplex Entertainment
Magic Johnson Theatres
Mann Theatres
Regal Cinemas

I will use the Los Angeles metro area as that is the way they are
listed. Most anyplace in the city or nearby is fairly convenient for
residents of Inglewood. For the other locations, you will find that
many individual theaters are listed as part of a larger region but
still fairly close. For example two of the cities you are asking
about are part of the Inland Empire, so lists which include that
section of Southern California will have what you are looking for.
Some lists will include both regions. Number of screens is listed by
theater. Some theaters have more than one screen but do not list the
number. So, what we will be doing in some cases is getting a rough,
but fairly close estimate and for others accurate totals, including
national and world totals.

AMC Theaters
AMC South Bay Galleria 16 - Redondo Beach
AMC Rolling Hills 20 - Torrance
AMC Pine Square 16 - Long Beach
AMC Santa Monica 7 - Santa Monica
AMC Century City 14 - Los Angeles
AMC Norwalk 20 - Norwalk
AMC Marina Pacifica 12 - Long Beach
AMC Avco Center - Los Angeles
AMC Beverly Connection - Los Angeles
AMC Montebello 10 - Montebello
AMC Hollywood Galaxy - Hollywood
AMC Fullerton 20 - Fullerton
AMC 12 Theatres Downtown Disney® District - Anaheim
AMC Burbank 16 - Burbank
AMC Media Center 8 - Burbank
AMC Media Center North 6 - Burbank
AMC Puente Hills 20 - City Of Industry
AMC Old Pasadena 8 - Pasadena
AMC 30 At The Block - Orange
AMC Promenade 16 - Woodland Hills
AMC Covina 30 - Covina

Loews - - - Here we will be getting into parent companies of parent
companies and a jolly good spaghetti tangle of who owns what, and do
they really?

I am going to quote part of their history so you will have an idea of
what I mean.

"In 1985, Loews Corporation sold its 350 screen circuit to a privately
held company. Soon after, the theatre chain was purchased by Tri-Star
Pictures which in turn merged with the Entertainment Business Sector
of Coca Cola, forming Columbia Pictures Entertainment. It was during
this time that Loews Theatres experienced its greatest growth,
acquiring four regional theatre circuits and building many new
multiplexes, more than doubling in size to almost 1000 screens. In
1989, Coca Cola sold Columbia Pictures Entertainment to Sony
Corporation of America.

Cineplex Odeon Corporation was founded in 1979 with the opening of its
first theatre complex, a 21 screen megaplex at Toronto's Eaton Centre.
Throughout the 1980's, the company expanded through new construction
and through acquisitions of regional theatre circuits in Los Angeles,
Chicago, New York, Washington DC and Seattle.

Cineplex Odeon Cineplex Odeon Corporation was merged with Loews
Theatres in May 1998, creating Loews Cineplex Entertainment, one of
the world's largest motion picture theatrical exhibition companies.

In March 2002, a restructured Loews Cineplex Entertainment was
acquired by Onex Corporation, Canada's fourth largest company with
global operations in the service, manufacturing and technology
industries, and Oaktree Capital Management, a premier institutional
money management firm with over $20 billion in assets. In June 2002,
Onex and Oaktree added Grupo Cinemex, S.A. de C.V., the largest
exhbition company in the Mexico City metropolitan area, to the Loews
Cineplex Entertainment group." - quote from Loews Corporate
Information
http://www.loewscineplex.com/corpinfo/aboutus.html

In the US, Loews has 131 locations and 1,306 screens.
In Canada 583 screens
Mexico 371 screens
Korea 48 screens
Spain 263 screens

Loews theaters are listed simply by country and state with no
breakdown by city.

Since you are interested in the number of screens a company owns
worldwide, another chain owned by Loews, though not in the Southern
California area, is Star Theaters in Michigan with a total of 156
screens.

I'm also glad you didn't do your own research with the The National

franchises and may be listed as individual theaters and individual
owners rather than chain operations. It could have gotten very
confusing, as if this isn't confusing enough?

I hope the above gives at least a partial answer to your request.

As you read through the above, I am still searching for information
about Pacific Theaters Development Group. There are bits and pieces
including the list of theaters you found. But what I'm running into
is that the basic information about the company is locked behind
subscription websites, including that of "Variety." I need to find
the relationship between Pacific Theatres Development Group, Pacific
Theatres Realty Group and Pacific Theatres' Consolidated Amusement Co.
When I get that tangle unwound, we may get to the information about
those particular theaters, screen numbers, finances, etc.

I hate leaving gaps.

I did find this:

"Pacific Theatres operates 400 screens at locations in CA and HI. The
theaters occupy spaces of 50,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations,
malls and tourist centers. Plans call 10 theater openings during the
coming 18 months. Expansion will take place in the existing markets."

In conjunction with the theater listing you have found, it might help.
I would presume this is the list:

pretty amazing once you guys get going

I want to make sure that this is a complete list of the chains, as I
am most interested in the medium sized, perhaps even small, chains...
I understand there may even be a franchisee that owns say a 10 theater
franchise?

Also, I am not totally clear why you don't think it would be helpful
to contact NATO.

Excellent job so far!

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 25 Aug 2003 13:11 PDT
Alright, I will work on that overnight. The reason I mentioned NATO
is that confusion may result from double listings. A theater may be
listed as part of a chain then listed again under the franchisee
owner, even as a secondary small chain. Unless we had fantastic
memories or an instantly referable list, the count could be skewed far
out of line.

Digs,

I hope this is fair to ask, but can you tell which chains have
theaters that are close to BOTH Inglewood AND San Bernardino? Not the
same theater, any theater in the chain.

Let me know if this is mission drift. :)

Also, I am still nervous that we might be missing some of the smaller
chains, which are the ones I am most interested in. Even if they are
franchisees.

I will give it my best shot. How much in a hurry are you for this?
To do this right, in the detail you want, will involve some emails and
a wait for response as well as the online, and other research. I have
a feeling we are going to find a lot of crossover ownership as we get
into smaller theater units. Those will have to be untangled to find
acceptable contacts. It may take a few days.

I'm also finding it interesting. I used to be a patron of some of
those theaters when I lived in LA.

I will consider any business that owns two or more theaters a "chain."
That should get us closer to what you are looking for.

this response given to remove clarification wanted flag :)

Digs how is it going?

I have done a bit of fishing, and it seems only 3 movie theater chains
are still publicly traded on the major exchanges... the rest of those
edgar filings seem to be for bankruptcies, delistings, etc.

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 26 Aug 2003 16:25 PDT
I'll see what I can find out. But it seems the theaters are mostly
still open so they would still count as screens.

Request for Answer Clarification by thinksmile-ga on 26 Aug 2003 22:51 PDT
Yes, i'm just also interested in which theatres are public.

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 27 Aug 2003 11:00 PDT
I'm working on as much of this as is possible. I'm just posting this
to take down the clarification flag.

If you would use the comments section for conversational exchange, I
will check on it frequently.

When the clarification flag does up, it often calls down the Great
Goog, who is often seen vacationing with the Great Pumpkin in Great
Falls.

I just had to do that :)

Thought you might be interested in a progress report.

We will have to take this thing in stages. First of all here are all
the theatre chains which have public information available. Many
smaller chains not listed here are family owned and provide no
information other than is what required by law to their various state
regulatory agencies. While such information is available to the
public, it would involve a trip to visit the agency in person or
obtained through a paid subscription service. So regardless of how
detailed we try to be, there will be gaps. Most of the subscription
databases I have checked have subscription rates in the hundreds of
dollars or higher.

Here are the ones I have found information about. I have included
them all as whatever project you are working on may expand in the
future to where you might need the information. I figured since I had
it available, you may want to put it away for future possible use.
Basic contact information is provided for each plus total screen count
and states where located. I have asterisked * those which have a
California presence.

Then I will continue the breakdown from there. You have asked an
interesting question which is giving my researching capabilities a
workout. I love it. - - - Also, do you read Spanish? Some chains are
for Latino patronage and their website information is also in Spanish.
I have no idea what is there. If you do, I will pass the links along
to you.

You will find research notes along with the listings.

This brings some changes to the original answer. Mann theatres was
listed as having a total of a 129 screens including California and
Colorado. With the merger, there are now 371. But don't count on it.
Just yesterday, Cinamerica Theatres announced that it is selling 16
theaters and 60 screens to Carmike. No announcement yet as to where
the screens are located but the count will change soon. and of
course, Carmike is one I will now have to chase down.

First snailmail response arrived yesterday, by Fedex no less. They
stated they are a family owned business and the only information they
choose to release is that which is already public through NATO. If I
need additional information, to contact the state of California. They
also expressed displeasure at having their name "bandied about in some
online forum." That seemed rather odd since I did not identify myself
as being a Google researcher.

What company fedexed that letter?

Sorry to post a clarify instead of a comment but my comments don't
always get a response :)

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 07 Sep 2003 13:14 PDT
Hi there - it looks like somebody gave you a good comment about ticket
prices and how they work.

As for the company to contacted me, they asked not to have their name
used and if already in a general list, not to have it pointed out.
Under the rules we work with, I have to honor that. There have been
other answers removed because a person or company did not want their
name or contact information published in public format.

As for the "tricks of the trade," there are non. So I'm not like a
magician. - - I make use of websites, libraries, email and snailmail,
and online databases that do not require a subscription fee.

Now that you have told me why you are looking for the information,
Maybe I could take off in a direction which would narrow that down and
eliminate those chains which would not participate in such a program.

I worked for the Los Angeles, Orange County chapter of the Easter Seal
Society in the early 90s before I moved back east. One of my
responsibilities was "in kind" donations. Some theater chains may be
approached on that basis depending on what your organization is.
There is a possibility of not only discounts, but perhaps even
outright donations. Your organization would have to be one that the
donations or discounts from the chains would be tax deductions for
them as well as good publicity if you wanted to take it that
direction.

I will also jump back on some of the chains I already have information
on above and ask about discount bulk ticket sales as student awards.
I will do as much of it by email as possible. Since most theaters
earn most of their profit from concession sales, it could be even put
to them on that basis. That is, you can get the kids in the door and
the theater can sell them the food. I've never met a kid yet that
wasn't always hungry.

Just an idea - - if your organization is one that is recognized and
would be able to allow a theater chain to claim giving you freebies or
discounts as a deduction, let me know what it is in here. A lot of
people read these answers. Who knows, by this time some theater
management types might even be following this question to see where it
will all lead and be ready to jump on the bandwagon. Stranger things
have happened in the past.

We are a for-profit company, so the discounts would be based on bulk
purchase more than "good cause."

Also: I've noticed the movie theater corporations are kind of
snotty... It surprised me that they aren't more interested in our
business, as we may purchase $100,000 plus worth of movie tickets.

This may be because, per the clarifier below, most of the ticket price
just goes to the studio... ?

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 08 Sep 2003 01:54 PDT
OK - I held off emailing the chains till I heard back from you. This
changes the approach. I'm still following up on the original
direction.

I'm just thinking out loud here. - - I'm wondering whether a film
studio may or may not sell bulk tickets or 'passes' for a particular
film that would be good in any theater that was a member of a
particular trade association, such as NATO, for example. (possibly as
part of a film's promotion)

Also, based on the information in the comment below about the "sliding
scale," I'm wondering if there would be the possibility of bulk
purchases if the tickets 'were not' valid for the first week of
showing but only later in the run when the theater would get to keep
more of the price for themselves??? There must be some way to have a
'date validation' on a ticket? In other words, if the theater
company can sell a ticket when the amount of profit they make from
that ticket is higher, they may be able to offer a discount based on
that profit margin. Maybe an easier way to explain it would be to
have you read an answer I gave about discount cruise line fares:
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=138430

If the theater chains were approached on that basis, when profits are
higher, perhaps something similar could be worked out.

As I said, I'm just thinking out loud and bouncing some things around
here.

digs,

good thoughts.

I had also thought of contacting the studios.

Note "Moviecash.com" for something interesting.

Also note: most discount movie tickets can be bought in groups of 10
or in advance for a discount if they are restricted to matinees and
movies already out 2 weeks.

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 09 Sep 2003 19:32 PDT
We might be getting this narrowed down then. I'm starting to look
everyday now for some returns on the snailmail.

Would you like for me to email some of these chains and see if they
have a bulk discount policy??

I think all the chains sell discount tickets, per the above.

The quesiton is if we can get an additional bulk discount beyond their
normal discount.

The original idea was to try to find one chain, thus increasing the
amount of total purchase and leverage for the discount.

Now I am wondering if we would be better off approaching independent
theaters, such as Flagship University theatre. With one location, we
might be a large enough percentage of corporate sales to get them to
play ball.

The chains are, to my surprise, totally unresponsive. Wonder why?

Must be good to be in the movie business! :)

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 09 Sep 2003 22:02 PDT
I'll look for some independents in the area then.

Clarification of Answer by digsalot-ga on 10 Sep 2003 14:50 PDT
Hello

It would seem that some chains do offer discounts, at least to certain
groups. It may be in the definition as to what the group is that
makes a difference.

For example, Brandeis University students can get Loews chain movie
tickets at a discount which are good at any Loews theater in the
country.
http://www.brandeis.edu/offices/ssb/movies.html

Loews also has a gift certificate program where they claim a $40 value
for $25.

In addition, they have a corporate discount program with a variety of
products available. One of these products is a book of 50 tickets
which can be used at any Loews theater. The tickets are $5.50 each.
I doubt if you could do much better when you consider the regular rate
is $7 or higher. Can be used anytime after the first 10 days of a
picture's release and any day of the week thereafter, including
holidays and weekends.

AMC - which has many screens in the area you are looking at, also has
a discount plan. The price is also $5.50 per ticket with a minimum
order of 50. It is called "the silver ticket" and is good for any of
their theaters. More information here about this and other products:

Mann's theaters have $5 gift certificate books. It doesn't say
whether the certs simply apply toward purchase or if they are accepted
as a ticket in their own right. But the use of such a cert would
still be a discount for your students, even if they have to pay the
difference. I could find no corporate discounts for Manns. They too
have screens around the area you want.

On the same page you will also find information about the Red Carpet
ticket book at fifty for $300, making them $6 ea.

Sorry, I originally meant "within 20 miles" of Inglewood.

The "Great Goog" is a nickname for the editors

With the additional material you have asked for, it will be into the
weekend but no later. I wish I were in front of some super computer
complex with all the answers at my fingertips. But we researchers
work from our own home machines and I have to track through the
websites one at a time. Theater listings and financial reports are
not always found at the same place.

Your card was charged after the initial answer was posted but not
before. You have expanded the question somewhat from the initial
information requested, thus the extra time needed for the more
detailed research.

Cheers

Digs,

This good stuff. Do you reveal your tricks of the trade or are you
like a professional magician? :)

I agree this is a very interesting question. Paper versions of
newspapers list theatres by "chain" which is perhaps obvious to you as
a research tool.

Also: To clarify, we are purchasing movie tickets from a company as
prizes for sstudents in these different areas... So we are interested
in CHAINS that have theaters in or near both cities, not one theatre
near both cities. make sense?

That way we can get a bulk discount by buying all of our tickets from
one company.

In regards to "If anybody understands the economics of the movie
theater business I'd
be interested in their comments. I understand that when you buy a
movie ticket, about 60-80% goes to the studio, and only 20% goes to
the movie theatre chain company. If you happen to know a lot about
the economics of this business, or can suggest a link that breaks it
down, that would be great."

Most theatrical release contracts stipulate that the movie theater
most play a movie for at least 2 weeks (George Lucas and Digitally
projected films usually require even more weeks). This is why movies
like Gigli stick around even after a horrible first weekend. Theaters
usually get around this by moving the movie to their smallest theater
and cutting out showtimes.

The box office gross is divided between the distributor (the studio)
and the exhibitor (the theater) on a sliding scale. In the first week
of release, the studio will get something in the range between the
rate you said (60-80%). The theaters get the rest. Of course, the
exact numbers are kept confidential. If you went to Finding Nemo on
opening weekend and paid $10, $6-8 went to Disney and Pixar and the
$2-4 went to the theater. The next week, the studio's rate would
decrease by around 10% and the theater's rate would increase by 10%.
So you would still pay $10, but the studio would only get $5-7 and the
theater would get $3-5. This would continue until a certain limit is
reached.
