wop-ga --

The song you are seeking is "When They Found The Atomic Power," by C.
Louvin, I. Louvin and Bain.

It was originally recorded by Hawkshaw Hawkins in 1947 on the King
label. It is included in a Hawkins compilation CD called "I'm a
Rattlesnakin' Daddy: The King Anthology, 1946-1963." Here is a link
to Amazon.com that includes an audio clip of the song. That clip
includes the snippet of the lyric that you remembered accurately:
Amazon.com: I'm a Rattlesnakin' Daddy
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00003E433/103-7867102-6341437

That Hawkshaw Hawkins compilation is not in stock at Amazon.com, but
it is available at Tower Records. Here is a link to a page with
ordering information:

http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?pfid=1818645&cc=USD

Here are links to the All Music Guide's description of the CD and to a
biography of Hawkshaw Hawkins:

Additional Information:

The Louvin Brothers wrote and recorded another post-WWII song on the
same subject, called "Great Atomic Power." Based on the brief audio
clips that are available, it is hard to tell if this is the same or a
related song, but at least one newsgroup posting indicates that they
may indeed be the same song:
Yahoo Groups: Hillbilly
http://216.239.41.104/search?q=cache:s57bcUowtdMJ:groups.yahoo.com/group/hillbilly/message/3860%3Fsource%3D1+%22When+they+found+the+atomic+power%22+bain&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

If you are interested in the latter song, as recorded by the Louvin
Brothers and Moonshine Willie, here is a link to the All Music Guide's
list of recordings of "Great Atomic Power":
All Music Guide: Great Atomic Power
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70305141807&sql=H497239

Clicking on any of them will take you to a page describing the album.
If there is a Barnes & Noble icon/link on the page, it will take you
to that online retailer, where a copy may be available for purchase.
Audio clips are available of the song from some on those recordings at
the Barnes & Noble site.

Search Strategy:

I began by searching the All Music Guide site, using "atomic power" as
the search term for song titles. The title of the song that turned
out to be the one you are looking for stood out as a prime candidate
immediately. The link on the All Music Guide search page took me to
the Hawkshaw Hawkins compilation, which in turn took me to Barnes &
Noble, which fortunately had the decisive audio clip.

A subsequent Google search confirmed the date of the original
recording, the songwriters and the possible relationship between the
Hawkshaw Hawkins recording and the other Louvin Brothers song with a
similar theme:
"when they found the atomic power"

I am certain that this is the song you are seeking, and I am happy to
have been able to find it for you promptly. If any of the information
is unclear, please ask for clarification before rating the answer.
