4,323,856 in the US in 2002.

This is the number of passengers on "unscheduled flights" (a term used
to refer to charter flights), according to data reported by the US
government's TRANSTATS database run by the Bureau of Transportation
Statistics (I'm not aware of similar data being reported for global
air traffic, so I hope the US figures will meet your needs).

TRANSTATS can be found at:

http://transtats.bts.gov/?submit=View+Online

There isn't a straightforward way to pull up the figures for charter
air traffic from the data system. That is (a) I can't provide a link
to the results, as they are computed on the fly for each data query,
and (b) it would be very complicated to try and walk you through the
steps to reproduce the data.

However, clicking on:

--Aviation, then

--Air Carrier Summary Data (Form 41 and 298C Summary Data), then

--Schedule T-3, then

--Passengers, Analysis

will get you most of the way there.

Play around, and let me know if you have any questions, or need
additional information.

Hello again,

I saw your "Helicopter" question, and just wanted to let you know --
any question that specifically mentions "Google Answers" is
automatically locked so it can be reviewed by the editors.

Your helicopter question is so locked at the moment, and can't be
answered yet. Eventually, the lock will be lifted, but if you don't
feel like waiting (possibly until Monda), just edit the question (or
repost it all together) to remove any reference to Google.

Hopefully, I'll get a crack at answering it for you.

Cheers.
