Please list first the 10 most profitable companies in the world in
2002, in rank order. For each, please list three columns of data: (1)
amount spent on R&D; (2) net income (or may be called net profit), (3)
net revenues (or may be called sales).

Example: In 2002, Merck spent $2.677 billion on R&D, on a net income
of $7.15 billion from net revenues of $51.790 billion.

DO NOT report US companies only, but consider most profitable in the
WORLD. Be careful to distinguish billions from millions of $. Please
tell me the sources of the data.

Likely source is Bloomberg News for the list. You may have to search
individual financial statements for the details.

Rank	Company Revenue Profit R&D
1	Citigroup $93,041,000   	 $15,276,000   	 $-
2	General Electric $131,698,000 $14,118,000   	 $2,631,000
3	Altria Group $80,408,000   	 $11,102,000   	 $-
4	Exxon Mobil $204,506,000    $11,460,000   	 $631,000
5	Royal Dutch/Shell$179,431,000 $9,419,000 $472,000
  	Group
6	Bank of America $46,012,000   	 $9,249,000   	 $-
7	Pfizer $32,373,000   	 $9,126,000   	 $5,176,000
8	Wal-Mart Stores $246,525,000    $8,039,000   	 $-
9	Microsoft $28,365,000   	 $7,829,000   	 $4,307,000
10	Toyota Motor $134,228,000 $7,509,420 $4,423,000

All amounts in thousands of US dollars.

I was unable to find any information supporting material R&D
expenditures for Citigroup, Altria Group, Bank of America, and
Wal-Mart stores.

There are slight differences between the amounts reported at the
Business Week site and the amounts obtained from Yahoo Finance. This
is because Business Week dropped nonrecurring items from its
calculations (see the Notes at the site). This affects the ranking of
Microsoft versus Toyota.

Sincerely,

Wonko

One good source (Business Week online) was identified. Unfortunately,
providing two conflicting sources of data, one of which is not in any
way a primary source (Yahoo) nor terribly reputable, makes the answer
problematic to use. Nevertheless, it was OK in the end.
