I am studying various sulfur based chemicals (e.g. sodium
hydrosulfite, hydrosulfide, sodium soulfide, sulfur dioxide) and would
like to know more about the chemicals used in a few of these sulfur
products end use markets. These markets include 1. Ore Flotation, 2.
Mineral Processing and 3. Metal/ Ore Refining. I would like to know
the size (value/ volume) of the chemicals used in the these 3
processes. |

Hello Blucken-ga,
Nice to see you back here again, as I always like a challenge, and you
tend to ask some pretty tough questions.
Your current question is no exception. There is a good deal of market
information out there about most of the chemicals you inquired about
(and others, like phosphorous pentasulfide, also used in ore
flotation), and I'd be happy to provide this to you as an answer to
your question.
The problem is, though, that most of the information focuses on total
markets for these chemicals, and provides only tangential information
about specific uses in mining and mineral processing.
For instance, information on sodium hydrosulfide lists 12 domestic
producers of the chemical, total production capacity, price per ton,
market factors, and trends in production and capacity.
However, the information only includes one factoid regarding your
specific question, which is that 30% of total consumption of sodium
hydrosulfide is used in copper mining ore flotation.
And frankly, I can't even promise that level of detail for all the
chemicals you listed, as mining/mineral use is often a very minor part
of the total market.
The market information comes primarily from Chemical Market Reporter
-- if you are familiar with their market reports, then you already
have a good idea of the detail I'm referring to. However, there are a
few other independent sources of information as well that I would
include.
With those caveats, would you be interested in my providing market
summaries for these chemicals, and links to more information?

I have the CMR data also but need more info on the end use markets I
described (ore, mineral, etc.). I have good data on the other key end
use markets for most of the sulfur based chemicals(for example: end
use markets such as pulp&paper, leather, water treatment). I just do
no have much knowledge of the 1. Ore Flotation, 2.Mineral Processing
and 3. Metal/ Ore Refining markets and the chemicals that go into
them.
Any further info on these markets, and specifically the chemicals that
are used in them (the sulfur products I mentioned in addition to other
chemicals) would help me greatly. For instance if you have data that
says $1B of chemiclas are used in the Ore flotation and the sulfur
products are only a fraction of this (Ihave estimates) and are used to
do x,y, and z and any trends in usage, reasons for usage (obviously a
niche at such low volumes) then you would be really helping me.
Thanks!

I'm still looking into this to see what's available on-line and in
some published resources I have access to.
I suspect, however, that to really get at the details of what you're
after would take access to a high price market study on mining
chemicals.
Have a look at the summary of this study:
http://scup.sric.sri.com/Public/Reports/MININ000/
You may want to consider plunking down some big bucks for segments of
this (or similar) reports, if the valient efforts of the Google Answer
team can't come up with the information you're seeking.

Thanks - let me know what you find. I know this is a tough question
and if the SRI report is the only avenue so be it. I dont need that
level of detail (SRI), but something more general at the overall level
for all chemicals used in the 3 markets would be great. And then any
info at all on the specific usage of the sulfur based chemicals in
these 3 markets.
Thanks
