Thanks very much for your answer. I only wonder if, getting on in
2003, that these figures are current enough. I am creating an
advertisement in a major regional publication.

Hello again 1722-ga,
The publication that I used for my answer was issued in April 2003.
This is the latest data that the Census Bureau has available. The data
for the following year wont be issued until April 2004.

In any case I downloaded the publication County Business Patterns
California 2000 that was issued in May 2002 to check if there were
major differences from one year to another and have added them to the
table so that you can make a comparison.

In an article in the South Florida Business Journal dated April 10,
2003, I found that identical data about the number of businesses in
Los Angeles County and Orange County was referenced.
Here is the excerpt:
According to the department, Los Angeles County in California led the
increase with 227,941 establishments in 2001, up by 1,659
establishments, or .07 of a percent, from 226,282 establishments in
2000. Orange County in the same state followed with 79,937
establishments in 2001, up by 1,381 establishments, or 1.8 percent,
from 78,556 establishments in 2000.
