I checked on links to a site using Google and got zero results. The
same link enquiry made to AltaVista produced 10 links, all active. How
can this happen, surely a link is a link? It can't be a question of
ranking, surely?
I'm confused.

Good Day suesue2-ga,

Although many of the popular search engines share content, they are
not one and the same index. While a link is a link, not all search
engines will know about it, care about it, or be able to read it.

Many search engines have a "Suggest a Site" link that can be used for
addition to their index. After you have been added to one search
engine, chances are that sooner or later others will pick up the site.
Most search engines "crawl the Internet" and try to follow links that
they find. As you might have guessed, just being linked to from a
website that is already index by a search engine can place you into
that search engine's index. Because different search engines use
different technologies, some websites that are easy to index for
search engine (A) might be difficult or impossible to index for search
engine (B). As a result, some websites will never show up in some
search engines.

Now, if you are referring to backlinks, the same scenario applies
here. Each search engine has it's own database of backlinks. Some
search engines update the backlink index more often then others. Even
with identical content on two search engines, the backlinks will
probably show up differently on both due to the separate backlink
indexes.

Think of the search engines as phone books: chances are that I will
not find your phone number in my phonebook, but that doesn't make your
phone number any less real. A phone number is still a phone number.
While most search engines cater to a global audience, there is no
central command to keep track of all the websites being put online,
and no search engine will have it all. Similar to trying to put
together a phone book of everyone in the world with a phone number, in
which event there will be many valid numbers that will never get
listed. If everyone went and started their own phone book, chances are
the content would differ. Like with search engines, a lot of the
content would overlap in the larger indexes, but it would never be
quite the same.

The Google backlinks function doesn't list all backlinks. Typically it
only shows those with a PageRank of 4 or higher. The most complete
list of backlinks can be found by entering your URL in the search box
at AlltheWeb.

Although I have heard the same claim at a few forums, my website shows
backlinks from sites with a PR of 0. As far as I know, AlltheWeb has
their own index of backlinks. It does appear to be a more complete
list than Google uses right now, but does not have anything to do with
Google...
