Question ID: 250002
I need step by step instructions on how to format a report in
Microsoft Project 2000. There is a standard report that is very close
to what I want - I just need to remove a few of the fields.

Objective: I need a listing that shows for each Resource, all of
their tasks with respective start and end dates. This would look
like:

PERSON #1 Start Date End Date
Task 1 9/1/2003 9/4/2003
Task 2 9/6/2003 9/7/2003
Task 3 . . .

PERSON #2 . . .

The report that is close is the standard "Who Does What" (path is:
View, Reports, Assignments, then "Who Does What").

This report, however, also includes for every Resource:
%Comp, Work, Overtime, Baseline, Variance, Actual
It also includes for every task:
Units, Work, Delay

I need each of these removed from the report in order to use.

I have searched through the options and help without luck.

(BTW, I am working with a ~400 line workplan using only the fields:
Task Name, Duration, Predecessor, Start, Finish, Resource Names. I am not
tracking any actuals or utilization)

Your quick feedback would be appreciated!

Hi,

I'm not sure how to do this with Project, but I do have an option for
you.

This is going to sound a little odd, at first, but bear with me.

First, setup a new printer.

Start->Settings->Printers Add Printer.

Local Printer, ( It will search, not find a new one attached to your
computer, and that is fine) It will present you with a list, scroll
down to File, because that is what we are going to do, print to file.

Now it will ask what driver we want. Scroll the right side down until
you find "Generic" Click on that and you will get a short list, we
want the one that says "Generic/Text Only"

Choose that, don't print a test page (waste of time in this case
really); and close everything up.

Now, open your MSProject, print the report, but don't use the button,
use the File->print so it asks you which printer to use. Choose your
Text Printer, it will then ask for a file name, give it one, and put
the file on your desktop so you can see it.

Now you have the report in a text file, with fixed width.

If you post this file to here with a link I can write you a small Perl
script which will now remove the columns you don't want, and save the
file for you as you wish it to be. The next time you want the report,
all you have to do is print to file, run the script and you will have
it as you want it to be, and you can print it from there normally.

If this sounds like an option for you, I'm more than willing to finish
off the answer.

thanks,

Web adept, thank you for the thoughts. I looked at the print to file
report and we decided to go with a copy-paste into excel, where the
formatting is more flexible. Best, - John
