Most free hosting providers require you to show their banner
advertisements. Is this acceptable?

Hi delsuresearch-ga,

I always thought there was an "unlimited" number of free website
hosts. Thanks to your question I realized that I was wrong.

Here's my search strategy:

First I visited Google's Directory (http://directory.google.com).

I located this category (of which I was previously aware) and it was
very useful in my search:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosting/Free/Directories/

Out of those directories, only these provided useful results for your
question:

Free-webhosts.com (http://freeweb-hosts.com)

Here's a direct link using the "power search" feature (searching for
100MB+, FTP transfer, subdomain):
http://www.free-webhosts.com/search-webhosts.php?ADV=72000000000000000000000000000000000000001000

Freewebsiteproviders.com (http://www.freewebsiteproviders.com)

Similar direct link:
http://www.freewebsiteproviders.com/search.php?ADV=8020000001000000000000000000000000000000000000&CO=1

Additionally I browsed this whole website:
http://www.0hosts.com/

Here's a list with the 17 free hosts that I found matching you
criteria. Please not that I selected them to be unique providers (to
the best of my knowledge) because many are co-branded providers. For
example, I deleted at least 10 web hosts that were 0catch.com's
partners.

Anyway, here's the list:

http://www.0catch.com
http://www.00freehost.com
http://www.250free.com
http://www.1Afm.com
http://www.9cy.com
http://www.Bonwalcpm.com
http://www.distanthost.com
http://domaindlx.com/
http://www.exaltedhosting.com
http://www.evilzz.net
http://www.fairmount.com
http://www.freeweb-hosting.com
http://www.freewebpage.org
http://www.gizba.com
http://www.topcities.com
http://www.xmsites.com
http://www.zacknetwork.net

I did my best to come up with as many free host providers, but not
many of them offer that much webspace (and the use of a subdomain).
I'm really sorry, but I really wasn't able to find more.

Unless you really need that much webspace I would recommend choosing a
free web host with less webspace but with better reviews.

Below it a link to a list with the "so called" best free web hosts:
http://www.stormloader.com/toptwenty/

Popular paid website hosts (based on my previous web surfing):

http://lunarpages.com
http://ipowerweb.com
http://apollohosting.com
...and many more :-)

Here are more paid hosting providers with the results ranked using a
cost effectiveness formula (using the 100MB+ criteria at
www.allcheaphosting.com):

http://www.allcheaphosting.com/sresult.phtml?wbody=Space%3E%231100%235MonFee%3C%23110%235SetupFee%3C%2310%236

There are lots of good paid webhosts. Sometime ago I came up with a
list of paid webhosts with good reputation at the WebHostingTalk
Forums (http://webhostingtalk.com). This is that not-so-old list (the
order is not relevant):

www.lunarpages.com
www.pair.com
www.futurequest.net
www.dathorn.com
www.httpme.com
www.crediblehost.com
www.sprintserve.net
www.unitedhosting.co.uk
www.vnpixel.com
www.darktides.net
www.icdsoft.com
www.dixiesys.com
www.apollohosting.com
www.hostgator.net
www.hostingmatters.com
www.venturesonline.com

I hope you'll find it useful, but I cannot really recommend any of
them. All I can say is that they had a good reputation in those
forums. That's all.

I also recommend you to read this article posted at Free-webhosts.com;
it can really help you to choose a good free web host:
http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-webhosting-article.php

Disclaimer: I cannot and do not endorse or recommend any of the
services posted in this answer. They are simple web search results.

I hope the information provided was helpful. Before rating the answer
please note that you are able to ask for as many clarifications as you
need.

If you don't know how to do that, please visit
http://answers.google.com/answers/faq.html#furtherclarification

I would be happy to help you (and make you feel that I deserve a 5
star rating). :-)

i need u to add domain registerers

Clarification of Answer by ldcdc-ga on 01 Sep 2003 15:10 PDT
Hi delsuresearch-ga .

I suppose you want to register a domain name so let me congratulate
you. It's a good decision to have your own domain instead of using a
host's subdomain.

Here's the response to your question:

ICANN (http://www.icann.org) is the non-profit corporation responsible
(among other things) for the domain name and root server system
management.

Here's the link to the webpage where they list the official Accredited
Registrars:

http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html

These companies have the right to register domain names. There are
many times more domain registrars, but they are simple resellers. They
just resell the services offered by an accredited registrar and it's
totally legal. Many of these resellers take their business very
seriously and provide a good service.

Here are a few rather large lists of domain registrars:

In Google's Directory (based on DMOZ.com's data):
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Domain_Names/
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Domain_Names/Official_Registrars/

For country specific domains:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Domain_Names/Official_Registrars/Country_Domains/

At Yahoo.com
http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Internet_and_World_Wide_Web/Domain_Name_Registration/

Now I know those lists don't tell you much.

I can tell you that I have a domain registered through a Godaddy
reseller (http://www.godaddy.com), but it's a local reseller.
Godaddy's services seem OK to me, but I've read both positive and
negative comments about them.

Registrars with good reputation at www.WebHostingTalk.com:

www.namecheap.com
www.registerfly.com
www.powerpipe.com
www.pixiedomain.com
www.godaddy.com - "so-so" reputation; some say they're good, some that
they're not

I'm sure there are many other registrars with good reputation there.
Feel free to ask for recommendations in the Domain Names Forum at
www.WebHostingTalk.com

Also I recommend you to stay away from the expensive registrars.
Expensive really doesn't mean great service in this industry
(unfortunately). You'd better try to find an inexpensive but reputable
registrar.

Disclaimer: I do not endorse or recommend you company and/or their
services.

Now I have to tell something but please don't take it personally. I
responded to this clarification request because I felt really bad for
listing only 17 free web hosting services. It was fine by me in this
case to do this and I'm really glad that I had the opportunity to help
you again and compensate for that.

I see that you're a rather new customer here and I feel that it's my
duty to point this out to you. The clarifications are meant to give
you the opportunity to ask for more information *directly related* to
the main, initial question, in case you feel more information is
needed. In this case you could've asked me for example to do
everything in my power to find another 3 or 4 free hosting companies
because, again, for example, you really-really needed 20+. I must say
that would've been really hard for me to do because I did my best to
find as many as possible the first time I searched for them, but I
would've tried nonetheless. I trust that you understand what I mean
and do not take this personally. I'm only trying to clear things up.

That said I thank you for allowing me to make up for the small number
of free hosts that I listed initially and I wish you to find a great
domain registrar!

If anything is not clear feel free to post a clarification request.

Sincerely,

ldcdc-ga

Thank you very much delsuresearch-ga for your kind words, the rating
and the tip. You were very kind indeed.

Unfortunately, for as much as I know, we are not allowed to contact
you by any other means other than answers, requests for
clarifications, answer clarifications and/or comments on this forum.

I will ask the Editors and if I am allowed to mail you, I will. If I'm
not allowed, I will tell you by posting another "clarification" here.

Thank you very much.

Respecfully,

ldcdc-ga
