How do the collegiate football divisions work? I have heard of things like Divisin I, Division I-AA, Division II, DIvision III. Can anyone briefly list the hierarchy of the different division and very briefly explain the difference and the competition levels. The main reason is that I heard that Jerry Rice and Kurt Warner played Division 1-AA college football, so I am now wondering what that is, and I want to know whether the college football that most big stars play in is called "Division 1" or "Division I-A" |

Hello relentless999, The following page from the NCAA web site should explain it all for you. As you can see, the differences are somewhat technical, depending on factors such as number of sports and attendance. It seems that the reason why Division I-A football is more prestigious -- and presumably involves competition at a higher level -- than Division I-AA football is that the games have a higher attendance, which generally means that the schools are larger, with more students and resources. "What's the difference between Divisions I, II and III?"
