Narnia,

Please give some more detail about what you are looking for, what you
are not looking for, and what information you already have about the
subject. The more information you provide, the better an answer we can
attempt to provide. Please keep in mind that for the price you've set
on this question, what you should expect as an answer should be in the
range of a few paragraphs with attached citation links.

We aren't mind readers, and many of us are hesitant to attempt to
answer questions when those questions don't precisely describe what
would qualify as an acceptable answer.

With all due respect, a researcher's reply will be directly related to
the fee offered - a tip can be nice, but it's not guaranteed...

To get someone working on this, please define what you expect to
receive as a reply.

Hello narnia-ga, and thank you for posting a question on a very
interesting topic.

I have looked at a number of papers and discussions on internet
classification schemes. While they generally acknowledge that the
internet poses considerable new challenges regarding classification, I
did not come across anyone who was of the opinion that the internet
absolutely defies classification.

Here are links and brief excerpts from some of the papers I came
across. I hope these are what you need. But if you feel additional
information is called for, let me know through a Request for
Clarification, and perhaps I can assist you further.

The Role of Classification Schemes in Internet Resource Description
and Discovery

This is a report and a state of the art review of the use of
classification schemes in Internet services. Classification schemes
have a role in aiding information retrieval in a network environment,
especially for providing browsing structures for subject-based
information gateways on the Internet. Advantages of using
classification schemes include improved subject browsing facilities,
potential multi-lingual access and improved interoperability with
other services.

Using Library Classification Schemes for Internet Resources

Classification and the Internet
Electronic versions of the DDC and LCC make it possible to realize the
potential of library classification to improve subject retrieval;
however, much of the renewed interest in classification as an
organizing and retrieval device for information resources has been
sparked by the growth in usage of the Internet and World Wide Web
(WWW).

Classifying websites

Websites are not physical items that we need to shelve so why give
them a call number? There are a number of reasons for classifying
websites:

Complexity In Indexing Systems -- Abandonment And Failure:
Implications For Organizing The Internet

Abstract

The past hundred years have seen the development of numerous systems
for the structured representation of knowledge and information,
including hierarchical classification systems with notation as well as
alphabetical indexing systems with sophisticated features for the
representation of term relationships. The reasons for the lack of
widespread adoption of these systems, particularly in the United
States, are discussed. The suggested structure for indexing the
Internet or other large electronic collections of documents is based
on that of book indexes: specific headings with coined modifications.
