Please furnish me the names/addresses/information of bead shops, bead
activities and bead associations in Berlin, Germany.
My wife & I will be in Berlin, Germany from 23 Sep to 30 Sep 2003.
While in Berlin my wife wants to visit bead shops, bead shows and
other bead related activities in downtown Berlin. She is a bead
enthusiast, member of
the Washington DC Bead Society, and would like to meet with others in
Berlin who also love and enjoy the world of beads.

Dear blackbeard355,

There are several good shops and centres that specialise in beads in
Berlin. I list them bellow, and personally recommend Tukadu, which is
very impressive in its non-conventional designs. The list is
alphabetical, and also contains addresses and public means of getting
there.

I also recommend, if it's possible at all, that you'll visit Wertheim
(which is unfortunately on the other side of Germany, the state of
Baden-Württemberg), where there is, on the 3rd and the 4th of October,
a conference of bead-makers from all of Germany (See: In German,
<http://www.perlentreff.de/index.php?cont=kongress>).

If we're out of Berlin for a while, another recommendation of mine
would be the Glass Museum in the village of Glashütte ("Glass
Workshop") <http://www.museumsdorf-glashuette.de/frame.html>. This
village, that existed as a glass-production community since the 13th
century (see explanation in German,
<http://www.brandenburg-info.com/teltowflae/f_glash.htm>), was almost
abandoned after the Fall of the Wall in 1989, and is now re-inhabited
with various artists, many of whom do glass-art (blowing,
bead-production, etc.). Glashütte is about an hour drive south of
Berlin, and although I went there by train (that goes to the small
town of Baruth, 7km from Glashütte), I don't recommend public
transportation to this place.

In Berlin, two museums are probably a must for beads and jewellery
lovers. One is the Vitra Design Museum and the Kunstgewerbemuseum,
both design museums. I was never at the Ceramics Museum, but I imagine
that it will be of interest. In addition, various collections in the
DHM (on Unter-den-Linden, http://www.dhm.de/) various ethnologic
museums as well as the Bauhaus Museum (http://www.bauhaus.de/) could
be of interest. Somewhat between a museum and a store - the Swarovski
Store - which contains highly expensive beads and crystals - is in the
Arkaden shopping mall in Potsdamer Platz. The KaDeWe department store
might be also interesting, as well as the Stilwerk design house, which
hosts established designers' works.

As for bead associations, there is the "European Bead Network", whose
centre is in Berlin (it is listed under the name of Natacha Wolters,
who grounded it in 1991, and whose art - and email - is available
here> http://www.fibre-art-synergy.com/members/Natacha%20Wolters/NW_fr.htm).
