A friend of mines father was in a group called "The Tabs" in the late
50's to the early 60's. They were on the Ed Sullivan Show and
American Bandstand. They had a top 20 song called "Dance Party".
Where can I find any information, photos, video clips, reviews, etc.
on them.

Thanks, RileyBirder

Hello RileyBirder,

I have found references to a Minneapolis area group called “The Tabs”
formed in the early 1960s. If this is the correct group, I have been
able to find very little information about it. However, I have found
information about a group that was formed by two former members of
“The Tabs” in the late 1960s. This group was active into the 1990s.
Would you be interested in this information? If so, please let me
know and I will post it as the answer.

I think it might be the group, but they were based in St. Louis, MO.
However, the record label (VeeJay) might have been out of Minneapolis.
My friend's father's name was Lionel Stokes. He (my friend, his
father is deceased) doesn't know anything about the other members.
Please let me know what you have found. Are you sure this is the group
that recorded Dance Party? It was a big hit at the time.

Hello RileyBirder,

Thank you for the clarification. I am pretty sure that the group that
I found is the wrong one. Here’s the link to their webpage.

The Litter
http://www.thelitter-lightning.com/

Their “Facts” page states the following:

“"The Litter" was originally formed from two popular Minneapolis bands
in 1966, "The Tabs" (Dan Rinaldi, Bill Strandlof) and "The Victors"
(Denny Waite, Jim Kane).”

I did find mention of another group called “The Tabs”, which included
Lionel Stokes, on the following webpage:

Meet Sonny Robertson, Blues Legend
http://www.geocities.com/stlouisconnection1/bio.html
“Next , began the longest and what I consider the best time of my
career. Was singing with childhood buddies Charles Drain, Lionel
Stokes, John Hopkins, Tuman Huges and Leroy Terry who all made up the
tabs recording artist for Vee Jay records in Chicago.and also Septer
and Wand records based in New York.”

There’s an e-mail address listed at the bottom of the page. Perhaps
this person has some information.

I haven’t been able to find anything else. Perhaps another researcher
will have better luck.

Thank you Googlenut and Bowler for the info. We were hoping to find
some publicity photos or reviews, but this is a start. Thanks again!
