What are the legal implications of creating a CD from a vinyl album?
Assuming the copyright is still valid, are you required to destroy the
vinyl album to sell the CD? Is even this enough to permit sale of the
CD?

Here are a few items that may be of interest to you:

"Because copyright allows the copyright owner to determine how the
copyrighted work can be distributed, you can't legally give a copy
even in a different medium to someone else( you have no distribution
rights )."

"Making a copy in a different medium without appropriate authorization
would be a violation of the copyright owner’s rights, unless the
activity is excluded under other provisions of copyright law. The
making of one copy of a work in a different medium may not be a
copyright violation, but what you do or intend to do with that copy is
important."

"...where you own the original LP or recording you are allowed to make
a copy onto a different medium e.g. CD/cassette tape where that
recording is for your own use. It would not be legal to sell or give
that copy to anyone else for their use."
