Who are the parents and siblings of Arthur Ellershaw born at
Bridlington Yorkshire on 27 February 1869 and died on 16 July 1929.
Was he the brother of Brigadier Wilfred Ellershaw who died on 5 June
1916 presumably on HMS Hampshire which sank after hitting a mine near
the Orkney Islands on that date. Wilfred's father was Rector of Chew
Stoke Somerset UK. Was Arthur's father the same man?

Dear horace-ga;

According to these documents and the following brief biography, ARTHUR
ELLERSHAW’s father was the REV. JOHN ELLERSHAW who was “educated at
Westminster School, RMA Woolwich”.

ARTHUR ELLERSHAW
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/Members/nigel.battysmith/Database/D0008/I3920.html

Here is a brief biography of Arthur Ellershaw:

Arthur Ellershaw was first married CATHERINE INGLES b. 03 Oct 1873 in
Stoke, DEV, England, and together they had the following children:

KATHERINE ELLERSHAW
PHYLLIS ELLERSHAW
RUTH ELLERSHAW
MARY ELLERSHAW

ARTHUR ELLERSHAW’S BIOGRAPHY:
“Entered RA 1888 (Captain 1889, Major 1909, Lt. Col. 1916, Col. 1921).
Served Northwest Frontier India (1897-8). Severely wounded (4 Queen's
Medals with clasps) 1903-4. European War (1914-8). Retired 1925. In
1926, he [was married] to Nora Mary Middleton, daughter of J.T.
Middleton, of Woking.”

Unless this information is a strange concidence, when compared to the
records listed below of both John and Wilfred Ellershaw, it does seem
to provide fairly convincing evidence that Aurthur and Wildred were
indeed brothers:

WILFRED ELLERSHAW

Since I cannot confirm this information beyond what I have given you
here after an exhaustive search, I must allow you to be the judge as
to whether this answers your question or not. Please let me know and I
will close your question if this is suitable.

I will wait for your response.

According to the 1881 household of John Ellershaw:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_2446572&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99

the wife of John was Elizabeth C.

There is a John Ellershaw who married Elizabeth C. Pilsworth in the
year 1866 (district Kirkstall, West Riding, Yorkshire).

This information can be found by searching
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

So Arthur was born in Yorkshire, were his presumed parents married.

Thank you to both commentators but I did have the information they
have given. I remain uncertain whether Arthur and Wilfred were
brothers, cousins or were unrelated as Arthur is not listed in the
household in the 1881 census nor in the 1901 census though no doubt by
the latter census he would have been in the army and no longer at
home.
I will continue to scan rootsweb etc. so thank you again.

Yes, Wilfred and Arthur were brothers, and I can confirm that Wilfred
was on Kitchener's Staff on board the ill-fated Hampshire.

Wilfred attended Marlborough College in England, and the entry as it
appears in the 9th Edition of the Marlborough College Register is as
follows:

=======
Ellershaw, Wilfred, (L Sch), s of Rev J Ellershaw, Chew-Stoke, Som. b
16 Jul 1871. left Mar 1884. RA 1892. Lt Col 1915, Desp, O of St Stan
(Russia), Lord Kitchener's Staff. Lost in HMS Hampshire, 5 June 1916.
=======

tutuzdad-ga has already shown that Arthur's father was *also* Rev John
Ellershaw, so Wilfred and Arthur were brothers.

There was also a third brother, and his entry in the register is:

=======
Ellershaw, Edward, (B2), s of Rev J Ellershaw, Chew-Stoke, Som. b 3
Dec 1867. F Sch. Gym VIII 1883. left Mar 1884. Bar Mid Temp 1892. S
Wales Bord Capt S Africa 1901-02. Transvaal Bar 1903.
=======

Wilfred also appears on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Debt
of Honour Register at
http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2894498
where details of his father and other relevant information can be
found.

Barker, G. F. Russell and Alan H. Stenning, comp. The Record of Old
Westminsters. Volumes I-II. London: Chiswick Press, 1928

Vol. I, p. 306f.:
Arthur Ellershaw, "... son of the Rev. John Ellershaw, Rector of
Chew-Stoke, Somerset, by Elizabeth Caroline, daughter of Lieut.-Col.
William Pilsworth ...".

"The Record of Old Westminsters" ("Subscriber Database"):
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7402

This should prove that John (Wilfred's father) and John (Arthur's
father) are identical.
