Question ID: 251603
I have filea in "Documents and settings\...\Local settings\temp" that
start up every time I open MS Outlook: "McV##.tmp" they start out
at about a megabyte in size and grows by the second. There are more
than one of these files in the temp folder, all in the double-digit
Gbyte range in size. Last nite I had about 8 or 9 files and one of
them got to 79 Gbytes before I figured out how to delete it. What
virus is this? Where did it come from? I've scanned for viruses
several times after deleting and come up with nothing until I start
Outlook again. Why doesn't my updated virus scan find it? I'm going
to delete MS Office 2000 and reinstall it. Will that get rid of it
for good. If not, what will?

I found an interesting newsgroup thread about this problem:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&newwindow=1&safe=off&th=dc3b17508b7b4295&rnum=2

Note that one of the posters in the thread says that he was told by a
McAfee tech that these files are related to automatic updates of
VirusScan.

From another newsgroup thread:

"I finally got thru to their [McAfee's] online chat, and they had me
turn off scriptstopper and wormstopper. (options/advanced). Forgot to
mention that I had Outlook 2000 running as well--seems to be related.

A better fix is in the works, they say."

"I had two computers here that did the same thing after an update...
my fix was to uninstall, reboot and then do a clean reinstall.
Everything is working fine now and I have every options enabled."

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&newwindow=1&safe=off&th=4dd00ad874125c89&rnum=4

There's quite a lot of discussion about the problem on the McAfee Help
Forums:

http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/search.php?mode=results

It appears that disabling scriptstopper and wormstopper may be the
solution, until McAfee comes up with a better fix.

Please let me know if this has been helpful; if so, I'll be glad to
repost this material as the answer to your question. If not, we'll
keep trying.
