Hi Bildy,
=======================================================================
1. What software programs will I need to download ringtones and
wallpaper and games to my LG VX4400 cellular phone.
=======================================================================
You can use "Bitpim" to load a decent number of MIDI files and BMP
wallpapers. Bitpim is an open source application under development. It
can manipulate your phonebook, wallpapers and ringtones, as well
access the phones internal filesystem. Bitpim is available for Windows
98/ME/2k/XP, Linux and MacOS.
=======================================================================
2. Where can I freely download this software as well as the ringtones
and other various programs.
=======================================================================
You can download Bitpim from the "SourceForge" download site:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=75211
Version 0.53 is the most recent. Downloads are available for Windows
(98/ME/2k/XP) and Linux. (The Linux version is of 0.6 test 2).
See this page for Mac information

You can download games, ring tones, wallpapers etc. through the
Verizon Wireless service - "Get It Now", for wireless subscribers
http://www.verizonwireless.com/ics/plsql/getitnow.intro
Also, you can find over 3600 FREE polyphonic ringtones at:

Other programs available:
DataPilot - This is a commercial product developed by Susteen. It can
only manipulate your phonebook. DataPilot is available on Windows
98/ME/2k/XP only.

GAGIN - GAGIN (Get Around Get-It-Now) is tool based on modifying an
escaped copy of a developer tool from Qualcomm. It can only access the
phones internal filesystem. This tool is preferred by the cracker
community. Gagin is available for Windows 2k/XP only.

SnapSync - SnapSync is by FutureDial who also do the Radio Shack
cables.With SnapSync Software, you can save and share phonebook data
and MS Outlook contact information between your PC and mobile phones.
SnapSync is avilable for Windows 98/ME/2k/XP only.

3. Exactly which cable will i need to do this, and where is the
cheapest place to purchase it.
=======================================================================
You'll need to get a USB cable (from Radio Shack) and install Python
(http://www.python.org/) on your computer. With that, you can use
Bitpim to load MIDI ringtones and BMP wallpapers. There are two types
of data cable available. Both plug into the USB port on your computer.
The connector on the other end is identical, but on one of the cables
connects to the phones internal serial interface, and on the other
connects to the phones internal USB interface. The internal serial
interface is the same as used by earlier LG phones, specifically the
VX-1 and VX-10, so if you already have one of those cables you can
reuse it. The serial based cable has a builtin chip that converts USB
to serial whereas the straight USB cable has no conversion. Also, the
USB cable can't charge the phone (unlike some Motorola-compatible
cables).

(Internal serial interface)
Data Cable for LGŪ 5350 - $20.99 (Catalog #: 17-789)

There may also be some issues with them fitting well. See this post on

Both cables cost $20.99 at Radio Shack (1-800-THE-SHACK) and are
manufactured by Future Dial.
There are only Windows drivers for the straight USB cable, so if you
only ever intend to use Windows, then that cable is fine. If you ever
intend to use Linux or MacOS then you should get the serial based
cable. The easiest way to ensure you have the latter is to ask for the
cable for the VX-10.
- Drivers for the Radio Shack/FutureDial cable
Linux and MacOS have builtin drivers for the serial based cable.
The Windows drivers are at FutureDial's website. You want to get the
drivers listed at the very top of
http://www.futuredial.com/support/usbdrivers/Drivers.htm.
This is self extracting installer, and significantly easier than the
previous set of drivers FutureDial had.
(The drivers for the FutureDial/Radio Shack cable sometimes give
bizarre error messages. This include permission errors, or claims of
invalid handles. In all cases users have rectified the problem by
reinstalling the drivers.)
