I found an article written in 2000, posted on the Internet that gives
an approximate number (using the word 'about') of chip plants in
California. Would this be enough for you as an answer?

Apologies, my memory failed me... the word should be "more than", not "about".

Hi
For $10 I guess that would do. But more up to date would be very
helpful. Would a $5 tip encourage you to try for a 2002 stat rather
than the one 2000? If that sounds like too much work for the money,
then just give me the figure u got already.
Many thanks
Alistair.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll see if there's something more
recent than 2000, but if there isn't, I'll go ahead and post what I
found.

Well, Vertigo1, I've decided that there's little else to find, so I
post these website links as my answer. A figure for 2001 is the latest
one I could get:

By Mark LaPedus, Semiconductor Business News, January 31, 2001 (1:49

http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB20010131S0005
- "...In fact, there are about 102 wafer fabs of all sizes in
California, which accounted for 23 percent of the chip-processing
capacity in the United States in 2000..."
I doubt this number varies greatly now.

SFBG News | Silicon Hell: Garbage in | April 26, 2000

- "...there are more than 800 chip and circuit plants in California
alone."

Forbes.com - Magazine Article - "Dig more coal - the PCs are coming"
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/1999/0531/6311070a_print.html
- "And there are at least 300 of these factories (fabs) in the U.S.
Collectively, fabs and their suppliers currently consume nearly 1% of
the nation's electric output."

From the above, I assume that a fab (microprocessor fabricating
plants) are one kind of chip/circuit plant. But I think the Techweb
number is the more accurate one if you're referring to the computer
industry only.
