Hello Telleroftales.

My search returned the following results for consumer electronics
market data:

As of April 2003

DVD player 56%
Home theater 32%
Digital camera 36%

"Since 2000, DVD players have been the most rapidly selling technology
in the country, more than tripling in penetration (from 18% to 56%).
DVD players are now as common in American households as desktop
computers and Internet access... One-third of all households claim to
have a home theater system (32%)... The study showed that one-third of
Americans now owns a digital camera (36%)."

(Note that at the bottom of this page, there's a table of "Household
Technology Penetration" with a lot of useful data.)

Digital set-top box - 35 million

"Today, more than 35 million digital set-top boxes are in use in
viewers' homes in the United States alone."

Plasma TV - Market penetration:

The market penetration of this product is slow but steady. Plasma TV's
are very expensive so it is hard to get TV into the average household.
However as the price of flat screen TV's fall purchases will steadily
increase.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Press Release dated January

LCD televisions 965,000 units 2002
LCD televisions 1.1 million units 2003

“Consumer interest in flat panel televisions will result in strong
gains in related categories in 2003. Sales of plasma sets will rise by
40 percent in 2003 with dollar sales totaling $616 million, up from
$453 million in 2002. Sales of LCD televisions will jump from 965
thousand units in 2002 to 1.1 million units in 2003 on dollar sales of

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Press Release dated August
29, 2003:

“Sales of LCD (liquid crystal display) and Plasma TVs have increased
tremendously during the first half of 2003 compared to year-to-date
sales in 2002, according to the Consumer Electronics Association
(CEA). These two technologies are fueling the fastest growth among
video products in terms of sales.”

“Both LCD and Plasma TVs offer many features over the traditional CRT
(cathode ray tube) TVs, including larger, thinner and flatter screens,
less glare and less radiation emission. Based on data collected by the
CEA, LCD and plasma sets now comprise 20 percent of all digital TV
(DTV) unit sales. DTV unit sales totaled 1.4 million through June of
this year.”

Market News Express:

“LCD flat panels are indeed expected to dominate the market by 2006.
In 2002, 91,000 plasma digital flat panel units were sold in the US,
compared to 175,000 LCD flat panels. This year, Wargo of Bear Stearns
estimates 151,000 plasma panels and 313,000 LCD flat panels will have
been sold. And by 2006, plasma TV sales are expected to hit 643,000
units, while LCD sales should top more than 1.4 million.

Price will make a difference, with plasma TV sales achieving higher
revenues. Last year, plasma sales totalled US$453 million, while LCD
accounted for US$105 million, industry figures show. In 2003, plasma
sales could hit US$616 million compared to US$150 million for LCD
units.”
