In purchasing a new TV (approx. 42" screen size, and which we expect
to keep for 10 years) are there any real advantages/disadvantages to
the main technologies currently available (tube, rear projection,
LCD)? Plasma sets are out of our price range.

Are you planning on buying a set that has HDTV capability? That could
make a difference in your choice among the display technologies you
mentioned.

Current LCD and plasma screens will most likely NOT last anywhere near
10 years. So, go for a tube or projection TV now, or wait for
technology to catch up with the demand.
