Question ID: 253247
We are trying to identify retired business leaders who have experience
running large American or European companies, but who have some
affiliation with Canada.

The individuals might Canadian by birth, by education or have merely
lived there at some point in their career (eg, running the Canadian
subsidiary of an American company). They should be retired or
otherwise not employed fulltime at this point. It is essential that at
some point in their career they have been a CEO or Chairman of a large
company (annual revenues of at least $5 billion), which could be
American or European. Nationality of the individual is not important.

Examples we have already identified include Don Carty, retired CEO of
American Airlines (born in Canada); Livio de Simone, retired CEO of 3M
(Canadian); and Sergio Marchionne (retired CEO of SGS in Switzerland,
educated in Canada).

Thanks

Might be able to help you here, but it depends a lot on what you mean
by "retired" A lot of people of the caliber you are interested in,
reach a point in life where they nominally retire, but go right on
operating in high-powered positions. For instance, take this fellow:

James R Baroffio

Director at Pioneer Natural Resources
Irving, Texas

Dr. Baroffio received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology at the
College of Wooster, Ohio, an M.S. in Geology at Ohio State University,
and a Ph.D. in Geology at the University of Illinois. Before becoming
a director of the Company in December 1997, Dr. Baroffio enjoyed a
long career with Standard Oil Company of California, the predecessor
of Chevron Corporation where he served as President, Chevron Research
and Technology Center from 1980 to 1985 and eventually retired as
President of Chevron Canada Resources in 1994. Dr. Baroffio was a
member of the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain Oil & Gas
Association, and Chairman of the U.S. National Committee of the World
Petroleum Congress. His community leadership positions included
membership on the Board of Directors of Glenbow Museum and the Nature
Conservancy of Canada, as well as serving as President of the Alberta
Nature Conservancy.

He's retired....sort of. Is this the type of listing you're
interested in?

If it is, I could probably find about ten or so, but not much more
than that...I'm just not seeing a whole of CEO-types that are meeting
your criteria.

Let me know if adding a small number of people to your list would be
acceptable as an answer to your question.

Thanks for your note.

It's fine (in fact preferred) that someone be still active in business
circles, as long as they are no longer the fulltime CEO of a company.
You are right, many former CEOs continue to sit on boards, to have
part-time consulting or Chairmanship roles, do civic leadership
things, etc.

In this case, the person you suggested is interesting but has not been
the CEO of a US company.... he was President of a Canadian subsidiary
only. Hope this helps.

Hi carterjon,

I'm interested in researching this question for you. To clarify, how
many business leaders who fit your criteria are you seeking?

Regards,
rainbow~
