Dear Fil,
Junior Walker appears in a recording of a performance from the 23
March 1965, on Hullabaloo, (Vol. No. 1) - "Guest host Dean Jones (Dean
Jones?) welcomes performers Gene Pitney, Junior Walker and The
All-Stars, Leslie Uggams and The Astronauts (The Astronauts?). 45
min." (Description from Movie Unlimited site
<http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musite/frameset/index.asp?frame=findresults%5Factor%2Easp&search=Junior+Walker>,
where you could also buy the VHS for $19.99).
According to Amazon's review on "Hullabaloo Box Set Vols. 05-08
(1996)", there are also Junior Walker scenes there, in the extras:
doing the "Shotgun".
Another place where you could see Junior Walker is a video with
clippings from another 60s music show - "Shindig! Presents - Motor
City Magic VHS Movie", which features (yet again) his "Shotgun" (as
"Junior Walker and All-Stars") (from the description: "The
high-energy, prime time pop music show of the '60's. Features the Four
Tops, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Temptations, and others. Includes
Motown classics "My Girl," "It's the Same Old Song" and "Stop in the
Name of Love" to name a few." - from Best Price,
<http://www.uln.com/cgi-bin/vlink/081227145132IE.html?ptitle=Shindig!-Presents---Motor-City-Magic-VHS>,
where it is currently out of stock). This video seems to be
out-of-print, although Amazon currently lists a copy for $79.90 (!)

The Usenet alt.video.tape-trading
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&group=alt.video.tape-trading
has several private listings of Junior Walker's recorded performances
(or interviews). However, I must disclaim, that the source and the
copyright protection of these is unknown to me:

(Both feature the same interview at the Letterman "Late Night Show"),
browse alphabetically until you reach his name.
Similarly, a user called Toima56 is offering a Shotgun video in what
was in 1999 considered a good quality
<http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=19990519115250.14547.00002671%40ng-co1.aol.com&oe=UTF-8&output=gplain>
- it could be the one mentioned before.
Steve's Vrock.net Classic Rock Video <http://www.vrock.net/j.htm>
features two versions of "Shotgun", one from "Motown 25: Yesterday,
Today, Forever (1983) (TV)" (In his categorisation: "Motown
25th-5/16/83-MT25") and another from "Hullabaloo (B&W)-Int18" (which
is probably the video mentioned earlier in my review). The benefit of
VRock's concept, is that you could get these two recording on one
video.
A recording of a Late Night-Letterman performance (dated November
1985), is available at Great Videos.org
<http://www.greatvideos.org/yesntsc.htm>. It features an interview as
well as a performance of WHAT DOES IT TAKE. The total length is of 5
minutes. See also <http://www.greatvideos.org/> for details (please
note, that the compiler of this list, put Jr. Walker's videos under
the band "Yes", for some obscure reason).
Rare/Hard to find items
=======================
American Bandstand's 25th Anniversary (1977) - 25th anniversary show,
with Junior Walker and the All Stars. Sites that refer to this show
claim that there is no video recording of the show. However, maybe
some collector has something.
Saturday Night Live - 11 April 1981 - This episode is actually very
special in SNL's history, since it is the last one before the writer's
strike, and after a turbulent season. "When comedienne Robin Duke
joined Saturday Night Live in 1981, one of the first things she did
was to introduce musical act Junior Walker and The All-Stars. In so
doing, she was given a script to read stating that Junior Walker was
the primary influence on the Saturday Night Live house band." (Source:
Dave Mackey, "Band History"
<http://www.davemackey.com/snlband/97history.html>). The bank
preformed four songs in the show and actually co hosted with Chevy
Chase. This show *might* be available through one of the discussion
groups, as in here: NYCarter8, "My Trade List
<http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=19990219095521.22352.00000057%40ng112.aol.com&oe=UTF-8&output=gplain>
(look it up under 80m). According to this discussion ("Did they ever
repeat the episode of C. Farley's hosting gig "
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=19981231154010.08216.00004969%40ng-fb1.aol.com&rnum=4&prev=/groups%3Fq%3D%2522saturday%2Bnight%2Blive%2522%2B%2522jr%2Bwalker%2522%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26selm%3D19981231154010.08216.00004969%2540ng-fb1.aol.com%26rnum%3D4>),
the show was not aired again, and does not appear in any compilation
of SNL shows.
Shotgun appears also in Junior Walker and the All Stars' appearance
(1965) in "Hollywood A Go Go". The video is hard to find, and I am not
sure that this one is the one from 1965 at the Hollywood's Attic,
<http://www.hollywoodsattic.com/shopping/pricelist.asp?prid=2380>, or
at the 50s-60s TV shows section at The Video Beat
<http://www.thevideobeat.com/50s_60s_rock_roll_tv_shows.htm>; or at
Rare Music Videos <http://www.raremusicvideo.com/item/Various_Artists_Hollywood_A_Go_Go>.
Dr. Ron Evans and Greg Prevost might have these in their collections:
*"Shotgun" HOLLYWOOD A GO GO 1965 #101
*SHINDIG! "Shotgun" 1964 #129
*and some HULLABALOO recordings.

at http://home.att.net/~outasite/rocknrollteenidols.html and Living
Eye Ltd. P. O. Box 12956-Rochester, N. Y. 14612 USA).
The film "Best of Where The Action is" features footage from this TV
show, and according to a Temptations site
<http://www.thetemptations.ourfamily.com/catalog.html>, it also
features a piece with Junior Walker. However, I was only able to find
it at Rare Music Videos.com, which doesn't describe artists that
appear after the Temptations in the video. Nor does it describe which
piece is included: http://www.raremusicvideo.com/item/Various_Artists_Best_of_Where_The_Action_is
On a side note, the recently released film "Standing in the Shadows of
Motown" features the "Funk Brothers", who provided background sounds
for the recording of "How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved by You)." -
although the film doesn't focus in Jr. Walker, there are might be some
footage available.
I hope that answers your question. In order to find an answer, I
searched using a combined strategy, searching for "Junior Walker" or
for "Jr. Walker", with words such as: video, vhs, dvd, and later,
names of particular shows, that were hard to find or even to date.
If you need any further clarification on this answer, please contact
me before you rate/tip this answer. |
