I'm a little frustrated and concerned that Google apparently does not "know" of Admiral Sims. He commanded U.S. Naval Forces in World War I. (And, for the first time in history, in May 1917, an American Admiral, Sims, commanded part of the British Fleet.) It was he who brought U.S. naval gunnery from a totally dismal record to the best in the world. The New York Herald Tribune said: "He influenced our naval course more than any other man who wore the uniform." He was a noted naval officer...developed the concept of convoys for the protection of merchant vessels. It was he who (had the courage at that time) to have said, "The airplane carrier is the battleship of the future." (At the time, battleships were considered the ultimate fighting machine.) And, much, much more. Alas. How soon we forget. There is more than enough to make an excellent movie on the intriguing life of this American Hero, should a Speilberg type feel so inclined. Research info. should be available from: Naval Academy, Annapolis; Naval War College, Newport; "Admiral Sims and the Modern American Navy", by Elting E. Morison, etc. |
