Question ID: 253749
Is there a company which offers access to a database of movies and
corresponding data such as cast, cost, production, director, budget,
ticket sales domestically and internationally (weekly), category
(comedy, action, ...) and so on? The data seem to be available in bits
and bytes on the net but I am more interested in a centralized
database with access via an API such that it can be integrated into
another program offering added value on top of the data.

Dear Hagen,

Yes, there is such an online database. It is called IMDB Pro, and it
is a premium part of the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). It contains,
according to their description:

"In Production
Expanded in production information for over 1,500 film and television
projects.

Contact Listings
Contact information for over 26,000 individuals and 5,800 companies in
the film & television industry.

 Box Office
U.S. daily & weekly grosses as well as international box office
listings for 18 countries.

Advanced Search
Generate millions of customized search reports from a database of over
7.5 million credits.

News
Complete entertainment industry news coverage from the Hollywood
Reporter, Studio Briefing, & WENN. "

(Source: IMDB Pro, <https://secure.imdb.com/register/freetrial?c=a30527f6d41696e6#signup>).
As you could see in this page, you could have free-trail for two weeks
on this database.

It costs $12.95 for a monthly subscription, $32.95 for 3 months and
$99.95 for an annual account. They have also special prices for
corporate accounts.

IMDB itself provides, for free, partial information in that spirit:
Weekly Box office tops (US) <http://www.imdb.com/Charts/>
US Show times <http://www.imdb.com/showtimes/>
Now Playing <http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/>

Being part of Amazon, IMDB offers API.

My search strategy: Being a movie buff, I knew about this database. I
later searched the web, to find if there is a similar service that
would match, as well as a search for IMDB and API, only to be sure.

I hope this answered your question. Please contact me if you need any
further clarifications on this answer, before you rate/tip it.
