Question ID: 253750
I'm looking for information about the total number of internet users
at Fortune 500 companies- that is the number of workers accessing the
internet from work.

The answer needs to be limited to the US (or the US and Canada).

I would also prefer that the number be for the number of users who
regularly access the internet (or as a proxy who use broadband to
access the internet).

To be clear, I don't care about accessing from home.

I'm looking for a reliable estimate here- doesn't have to be an exact number.

If a very good international number was available, that would be acceptable.

And- frequency of internet use is a nice-to-have not a must-have.

Thanks...

Dear namezzz-ga,

Good day!

Thanks for posting an interesting question to this forum. There are a
lot of statistics out there over Internet usage at work.
Unfortunately, an exact number is difficult to arrive at - as you
rightly agree to. However, I have compiled some really useful
statistics that I hope will satisfy your query to a reasonable degree
:)

A. The eMarketer-WSJ report
eMarketer in collaboration with the Wall Street Journal had published
a voluminous report (118 pages!) titled "An Elephant in the Room: The
Online At-Work Audience" in February 2003. Key findings from this
report are listed below:
- 37% out of a total US workforce of 135.1 million regularly go online
at work.
- 37.5% of at-work users are employed by large corporations (1,001 or
more employees), and nearly 40% come from small firms (less than 100
employees).
- Between 43% and 52% of at-work users earn more than $75,000 in a
year.
- 70% of at-work users have a college degree or higher.
- 86% of them have broadband access at their workplace.
- At-work users spend more time online versus at-home only users, and
business executives are particularly heavy users of the internet.

B. The UCLA Annual Report
The report titled, "Surveying the Digital Future", published in
February 2003 is one of the most respected and authoritative sources
of data pertaining to the USA. This year's report notes the growing
levels of Internet access at work for both personal and professional
use by adult users. Likewise, the Report notes the high levels of
e-mail access at work for both personal and professional use. The
following tables summarizes the findings:

1. Internet Usage at Work
Year Purpose
       Business Personal
2002 90.2% 60.5%
2001 89.7% 60.7%
2000 83.7% 50.7%

2. E-mail Access at Work
Year Purpose
       Business Personal
2002 83.5% 57.1%
2001 85.5% 58.1%
2000 79.7% 52.4%

C. Interpretation
The number of people working for Fortune 500 is less than 10% but for
our calculation, we will adopt this figure. Thus,

Total US workforce = 135.1 million
Total Fortune workforce = 13.5 million (@10%)
Fortune workforce online = 5 million (@37.5%)
Fortune Internet usage for Business purpose = 4.5 million (@90%)
Fortune Internet usage for Personal purpose = 3 million (@60.5%)
Fortune E-mail access for Business purpose = 4.2 million (@83.5%)
Fortune E-mail access for Personal purpose = 2.9 million (@57.1%)

I hope that you will find this information useful as well as
interesting!

Thanks & Regards,
