Question ID: 254034
I need the manufacturer name and model # and the name and address of a
retailer where I can purchase an industrial strength steel work bench.
I am going to fasten a large combination work bench and pipe vise to
the bench which will be used to hold large metal pipe which I will be
threading on both ends using a hand operated mechanical threading die
with a long handle which provides a large mechanical advantage. This
will generate a tremendous anmount of torque and I don't want the vise
to break free from the table or damage it. The table will be fastened
using large lag bolts to a concrete pad so the legs of the table will
have to have reinforced holes which allow me to do so. The table
should be approximately 3x6 feet and 36 inches high?

Hello doctoruro,

Thank you for your question.

There are numerous manufacturers of "industrial" workbenches, but
understanding your needs, I limited my selection to those that
appeared to meet ALL of your specs and needs and seemed to be what I
consider "heavy duty" designs. I don't think you will find what you
need at Home Depot, Sears or other supply stores of that ilk. You will
need an industrial supplier.

For example. take a look at these from Cisco-Eagle:
http://www.cisco-eagle.com/storage/shopequipment/open_workbenches.htm

Open Work Benches

"A rugged platform for work of all types. Standard units include a
top, legs and stringer. Each model can be ordered with your choice
from 4 types of top materials. The bench can be accessorized with
drawers, electrical outlet strips, back & end stops, risers and a
lower shelf. For detailed information, see standard open workbench
models.

Open work bench units are available with either fixed or adjustable
height legs. Both leg types are punched for tops, stringers, shelves
and floor anchoring. Fixed height legs are designed for overall
surface height of approximately 30" or 34". Adjustable height legs
offer work surfaces from approximately 30" to 36" high, adjustable on
1" centers, plus knockouts for standard electrical outlets.

If you want assistance in specifying industrial work benches, a quote,
or just a question answered, Cisco-Eagle can help you. Call
888-877-3861 toll-free in the United States, during business hours.
You can contact us for a guaranteed one-business-day response at
24hours@cisco-eagle.com"

These can also be ordered online at this site and delivered to your
door. There are quite a few options available.

Manutel, Inc. has what appear to be simple and rugged designs:

This page has their heavy duty models:
http://www.manutel.com/workbenches_2.html

ALL-WELDED BENCHES

Most solid workbenches available, these all-welded workbenches feature
a wood-filled 3/16" steel top, with 11 gauge steel legs and stringers
for extra strength and rigidity. Bolt-down footplates are standard.

Overall height is 34".
Colour: Blue
5000 lbs capacity all-welded bench.

Once again, they available direct from the manufacturer.

A Plus Warehouse has an interesting selection at this page:
http://www.apluswhs.com/scripts/ap_123benchB.cgi

Pricing and ordering is available online and they seem to be
reasonably priced.

Compmark also has quite a few models. Their pages are in frames, but
click on the Extra heavy duty models:

EXTRA HEAVY DUTY STEEL PLATE TOP WORK BENCH

Sets the standard for heavy duty performance.
Super-rugged 3/8" steel plate bench top with 12 ga. back plate.

Solid support of bench top with all welded legs made of 2 x 2 x 1/8"
angle. Formed 12 ga. stringer and angle tie rods are provided with all
benches for maximum strength and rigidity. Available in 30", 32" or
35" bench leg height -- add size to Product No. Green finish. Shipped
KD. FOB Shipping Point.

I like the fact the top is solid heavy steel for your application.
Pricing and ordering is online.

Click on the link to benches, then on the Heavy Industrial type at LPT
for another selection with multiple options to create a custom bench
for your needs:
http://www.lpi-inc.biz/iebenches.html

Abtec allows you to build your own with their parts. I was drawn to
the 2 1/4" thick maple tops for mounting your vise and other
immovables:
http://www.abtec.com/workbenches/workbenches.htm

If you would consider used, Moose Industrial Surplus has a few
interesting pieces:
http://www.mooseindustrialsurplus.com/tools_page.html

Fabrication clamp table

Large Fabrication clamp table approx. 6’ x 4’, Top is solid 2” thick
steel grate, it has 2” square holes all over it so you can clamp your
work in any position, legs are sch 80 structural tube. This table is
heavy, at least 1 ton. (!) $500

You will find hundreds and hundreds of manufacturers and sites
offering what they tend to call "industrial workbenches" but some are
simply not sturdy enough for your need as described. The links above
appear to be some of the most appropriate and should offer you a
number of excellent choices.

Search Strategy:

industrial +workbench
industrial +workbench +bolt +heavy
"heavy duty" +workbench
"heavy duty" +shopbench OR "shop bench"
industrial +shopbench OR "shop bench"

I trust my research has provided you with a good selection of
extremely heavy duty workbenches to fit your need. If a link above
should fail to work or anything require further explanation or
research, please do post a Request for Clarification prior to rating
the answer and closing the question and I will be pleased to assist
further.

Regards,
