I run a small B&W student newspaper and get it printed by printing off
a
copy on my home printer then taking it to the commerical printers
where they photograph it and make plates which are then used in the
printing press. The printers have told me that they require the
original to be at 100 dpi for it to photograph properly. The problem I
have is that I don't know how to adjust this on the PC or printer so
it is currently printing at a far too high dpi and not working
properly with the printing press. So I am asking how to produce a
printed document on my home PC that is exaclty 100 dpi. I use windows
XP and Adobe InDesign 2.0 to produce the document. The printers that I
have access to currently are HP Deskjet 870cxi, HP Officejet G85, HP
Laserjet 4000N and HP Deskjet 1120C.

Hi Dant,

As you may have read from the comments below, 100 dpi is a really a
low print resolution especially for gray scale images. For printing
purposes, you must at least have 300 dpi to get a good result. From my
experience, 75-150 dpi and up is ok for line-art images. Is it
possible for you to ask the printers why 100 dpi is ideal? From there,
we may be able to get the best answer for your question.

Regards,
Feilong

100 dpi sounds like an awfully low resolution if you want something to
look good, especially if there are graphics.

In any case, I'd suggest looking for an "Advanced" button under
printer properties and see if there's something that lets you adjust
the resolution.

I too don't understand why such a low DPI which should actually
produce a poor quality document would be requested, but here is what
HP says:

Question: My printer prints 600 dpi, how can I check or change its
settings?
For example, you know that your printer can print 600 dpi and you want
to check or change its settings.

Answer: Check the printer properties in the printers Window.
The location of this setting differs depending on your printer driver
and your operating system. The following instructions are general.
Start with the following steps:

In the bottom left corner of the screen, click the Start button.
Choose Settings.
Choose Printers.
In the Printers window, click the icon (picture) of your printer.
Click the right mouse button.
In the menu that pops up, use the left mouse button to click
Properties.
Look below for the scenario that best fits your situation and follow
the instructions
